For numbers 3-4, refer to the article on Palm Oil
Indonesia and its Palm Problem
Palm oil is a little-known ingredient found in nearly half of all supermarket goods, from
brand-name foods like Doritos and Coca-Cola to products like cosmetics, soap, toothpaste,
lipstick to cake mixes, peanut butter, margarine, chocolate, cooking oil, and many more.
Indonesia is the world’s largest supplier of palm oil. Indonesian farmers have historically
relied on slash-and-burn techniques (kaingin) to clear their land, torching grass and
underbrush for the expansion of palm oil plantations in regions like Sumatra and Kalimantan.
The global demand of palm oil is behind the widespread environmental damage in
Indonesia, where the expansion of plantation land has been linked to the distraction of
ecologically rich rainforests and annual forest fires that this year alone burned through an
estimated two million hectares of forested area in the span of five months – turning a forest
roughly the size of the US state of New Jersey into ash and cinder.
This year’s forest fires spread with alarming speed, blanketing cities like Palangkaraya
under a thick layer of acrid smoke as the haze spread to affect countries such as Singapore,
Malaysia, and far-flung as the Philippines and Thailand. At their height, the forest fires
produced more greenhouse gases.
This year’s forest fires were among the world’s worst. Experts now wonder whether the
industry and the government are ready to adopt the serious reforms needed for the
environmentally sustainable production of palm oil.

________3. Atoms as the unit particles of materials follow the Environmental Principle of “Everything
must go somewhere.” Trace the correct path followed by the atom based on the article.
I. When rainforests are burned, atoms turn from living matter into ash, cinder, and
haze.
II. Atoms from the soil react and travel up to palm oil plants which are turned
eventually into cosmetic, hygienic, and food products.
III. Atoms from haze react with atoms in the atmosphere contributing to global
warming, turn rain or get into the lungs of organisms causing respiratory
diseases.
IV. Atoms in living organisms become ash fertilizing the soil and enriching palm
plants.
A. I & II only B. III & IV only C. I, II, and III only D. I, II, III, and IV
________4. Another Environmental Principle is “Everything is connected to everything else”. Based
on the article, which of the following interconnections will promote Earth Care.
A. Palm oil production provides jobs to Indonesians and provides consumer goods.
B. Forest fires quickly clear the land providing fertility to the soil for growing palms.
C. Palm oil companies buy palm oil from the producer when it has ensured wildlife
conservation in the plantation, fair working conditions, no clearing of primary
rainforests, and no displacement of local peoples.
D. Burning of forests creates haze and greenhouse gases that affect other countries
and the world.

Instructions: Read and study carefully the articles below about the atom and nuclear
energy. Highlight important words or concepts in the article. These may help you answer
the question that follow. Write your answers on the space provided.
Article 1: THE ATOM AND NUCLEAR ENERGY
Atoms are tiny building blocks from which everything around us is constructed. It’s
amazing to think that you can make anything out of atoms! Each kind of atom with its
unique traits can be combined to create numerous other things, living or not, from a
particle of sand, to a snake to an ocean liner. It is astonishing!
Its nucleus promises tremendous nuclear energy from nuclear fission and fusion.
In a larger scale, solid state physics deals with crystallography, thermal conductivity,
quantum mechanics, etc. then back to nanotechnology and sub-nuclear particles. Consider
the applications of nuclear energy in our life below.

Article 2: Radiation Safety Issues

Radiation exposure does exist in many items that we encounter regularly, such
as microwave ovens, radiation through X-ray machines and cancer treatments, cell phones,
nuclear facilities, computers, UV rays, and many more.
Ionizing radiation interacts with living tissue by transferring energy to cellular
matter. This interaction damages cellular function thus radiation exposure can be a serious
health risk. In the case of cell phones, it can cause radio wave sickness manifested by
occasional headaches and fatigue to enzyme changes that affect DNA and cell growth and
can result in cancer.
Radiation effects are the major concern in harnessing nuclear energy. It can truly
provide a tremendous amount of electrical energy and less global warming gases, but its
biological implications are quite glaring. Consider several nuclear accidents in history,
Chernobyl, Three Mile Island, and the most recent the Fukushima accident in the event of
the earthquake that struck Japan in March 2011. Radiation sicknesses were evident –
nausea, vomiting, skin cancer, birth defects, sterilization, blindness, etc. not to mention its
effects on plants and the environment.
The world has also witnessed its effects in nuclear weapons particularly the A-bomb
dropped in Nagasaki and Hiroshima in1945. Truly our existence is threatened by the
adverse effects of nuclear energy (Metacafe, 2012).

MODULE 1 ANSWER SHEET (LESSON 2)

Class Number: ________ Full Name: _______________________________ Teacher: __________________

Grade & Section: _______ Class Adviser: ___________________________ Date Submitted: _____________

Instructions: Read and study carefully the article below and do the task that follows.
In 1986, Antoine Henri Becquerel was investigating the possible formation of X-
rays from uranium salts exposed to intense heat coming from the sun. By chance, he left
some crystals of salt on a photographic plate wrapped in a piece of black paper.
Due to the poor light source, he stopped his investigation. Instead, he focused his
attention on developing the photographic plate. To his surprise, the plate was largely
darkened in the region where he unintentionally placed the crystals. It showed that the
uranium salt was emitting radiation different from the properties of X-rays. Becquerel
called this phenomenon as radioactivity (Españo & Apostol 2010).
If you are the investigator of this experiment, which of the following actions will
you do? Explain your chosen answer in 3-5 sentences.

a. Proceed with the experiment even without the necessary materials

on hand.

b. Change the procedure of the experiment without necessarily using

the sun's energy.

c. Follow what Becquerel did.
