D
iamonds are luxurious, unique, and often
unattainable. Yet the hardest stone known to us is
intricately woven into our daily lives — with much
more yet to come.
Scientists at Stanford University have discovered
a way to use diamondoids — the smallest possible bits of diamond
— to assemble atoms “Lego-style” into the thinnest possible
electrical wires, just three atoms wide. A wide range of applications
will arise, such as fabrics to generate electricity, or optoelectronic
devices that employ both electricity and light.
Next is the ability of diamonds to conduct electricity without
loss, and with it, the growing use of diamonds as a replacement for
silicon in semiconductors. Those familiar with the industry will
know the limitations imposed on “Moore’s Law” by the problem

We think about all the things that we

Time, I think is the greatest luxury
in life. It’s also the one that we take
for granted the most. It’s definitely a
luxury in my life. I love my relationship
with the House of Dior. I feel very
honoured to be a part of that house. I
think there’s very few fashion houses
that carry the kind of history and iconic
image that Dior has. I am so grateful
because it’s been a really creative
working experience. It’s just so classy
beyond belief, and every time I do the
campaigns I am always somewhat in
disbelief that I’m that girl. It’s nice
knowing that you’re working with
people who won’t compromise.
I never take that for granted, but I’m
always very aware that I’m one person and
I can’t wear everything. The idea of stuff
just hanging in my closet and not being
used, there’s a little bit of the African in
me that gets bothered by that. My whole
concept in life is that if you’re not using
it, you should give it to somebody else so
they can use it.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO
YOUR 20-YEAR-OLD SELF?
I would say, “Calm down”. I was always
in a rush. I felt like time was going to run
out. Now that I’m older, I know I’m not
missing out on anything. When I hit 30, I
realised I didn’t have to please everybody.
I could actually enjoy life, which is not a
bad thing at all.

range from De Beers is a warm, sentimental
tribute to the brand’s founding city. Named
‘London by De Beers,’ the collection draws
its inspiration from the winding course of
the river that intersects the British capital,
and the silhouettes of four of its architectural
landmarks.
In 2001, De Beers opened its first De
Beers Diamond Jewellers at 45 Old Bond
Street, later expanding the concept to 18
countries worldwide. “We are proud to
call London our home, and to introduce
our first collection designed as a tribute to
our brand’s founding city,” says François

A
t 45, Nirav Modi is a big
success story. Within
the span of six years, his
namesake brand has staked
its claim in the diamond
high jewellery scene, both
locally and internationally. What started
out as a simple earring design for a friend
became a luxury brand, with stores in the
high streets of New Delhi, Mumbai, New
York, Hong Kong, Macau, and London. By
2020, the plan is for the brand to have 30
more boutiques in a dozen countries.
While the world was reeling in the
2009 recession and diamond prices were
in a slump, Modi aggressively bought
many substantial pieces. Call it luck or
foresightedness, his gamble paid off. But
unlike others who may have simply resold
the stones, Modi took to setting them in
stunning designs. “Growing up in a family
of diamond manufacturers, my entire
childhood was surrounded by precious
gems,” he shares. “I was fascinated with rare
diamonds. I spent a lot of time with jewellery
craftsmen, which eventually inspired me to
create one-of-a-kind designs and strive for
excellence.”
One of his important pieces is the
Golconda necklace that graced the cover page
of Christie’s 2010 Catalogue — a first for an
Indian jeweller. The necklace is embedded
with a rare 12.29ct Golconda diamond,
suspended on a lattice of trademarked Ainra-
cut diamonds and pink Argyle diamonds.
With this as a phenomenal start, Nirav Modi
— the brand — was born.
Born to a diamantaire father and interior
designer mother, Modi was exposed to
jewellery and art at an early age. This is
evident in the brand’s philosophy, aesthetics,
and, of course, jewels. “In each of our jewels
you will find an element of art in the setting
of the diamond. For instance, the Lotus
Collection was inspired by Claude Monet’s
masterpiece, the Water Lilies,” says Modi.
When asked about his manufacturing
process, Modi explains: “It takes

approximately 550 hours to manufacture
a Rolls Royce, while its take us 300
hours to craft a fine pendant and
2,000 hours to create a grand
necklace.” High jewels coming out
of his workshop are not just pretty
designs studded in diamonds, but
made special with patented cuts,
like Ainra, Mughal, Jasmine, and
Endless. Often, they bear complicated
mechanisms, such as the clever joining
of more than 90 moving parts in the
Embrace bangles.
One of the first Indian jewellers to
move away from traditional designs, Modi
strives to have minimal visible metal in his
pieces. In the Ainra cut, the links consist
of two crescent shaped diamonds fastened
together, and many of them put together
form chains or lattices. “With barely any
metal visible, the diamonds appear to be
floating, and weaving diamonds together
ensures that each jewel is very light and
comfortable for the wearer.”
The Endless cut, one of Modi’s
specialised cuts, makes for bespoke

pieces. “I wanted to create a ring with
no visible metal, but cutting out a single
uninterrupted ring of diamonds from a
larger chunk is not feasible for obvious
reasons.” His solution? The Endless
cut, which creates a seamless halo of
diamonds with calibrated curves to create
a continuous, ‘endless’ diamond ring effect.
“Due to the nature of the cut and the ring,
each diamond has to be sized, measured,
and calibrated to the wearer’s finger,”
explains Modi.
With the recent spree of openings of
new stores and exhibitions, the world got to
see more high-value pieces from the brand.
The Diamond Maharani necklace greeted
the elite guests in New York, the Water Lily
necklace made its debut at the Biennale
des Antiquaires in Paris, and the Emerald
Maharani necklace was first exhibited at
their 5th anniversary celebrations.

Modi has extended its signature engagement
ring lines, including Tulipe, Signature
Solitaires, Ribbon, and Celestial. “We are soon

he most intensely coloured diamonds, known as fancy
intense and fancy vivid, can fetch astronomical prices.
Records for coloured diamonds sold at auction are
continuously broken, both in ‘per carat’ prices and the
total sum paid for any gemstone or piece of jewellery.
The reason for this is, of course, rarity. Other than near-
colourless diamonds, which are rather plentiful, an intense coloured
diamond is exceptional. For every 10,000 diamonds found, only one
showcases a beautiful colour — even more priceless if the diamond
exhibits an even distribution of hue, and is of a certain size.

and jewels, an ancient
art of adornment, are
once again becoming
popular among designers
and jewellery houses. Of
Persian origin, the hand
jewels’ popularity spread to India, where
the art evolved into elaborate garlands
of jewels covering the entire surface of
a woman’s hand. This type of jewellery
is commonly referred to as Haath phool
(or flowers for the hand), and designs
usually incorporate a repetitive flower
motif in gold or silver, set with gemstones
and embellished with enamel. The
haath phool was initially a regal piece of
jewellery, worn exclusively by queens and
princesses, but the Mughal courtesans
adapted the jewels for themselves. Over
time, the hand jewels became an integral
part of adornment for women within the
Indian sub-continent.
Contemporary designers have
embraced the elegance of hand jewels,
and re-interpreted the style, focusing
more on minimalist pieces that still
retain a vibrant sense of exotic sensuality.
Yeprem Jewellery has created a delicate
range of hand jewels, where the design
elements appear to float on the hand. This
18K gold piece from its Smart Collection
is intricately beautiful in diamonds and
emeralds. Similarly, the understated Angel
hand bracelet from Messika Joaillerie
has an unexpected appeal. The diamond-
encrusted angel wings hug the back of
the hand, while the slim bracelet fits
within the ‘V’ of the thumb and forefinger
and encircles the palm. Matching Angel
pendant and earrings complement the
look.
In ancient cultures, hands were a
metaphor for thought, communication,
and seduction, and the earliest forms
of hand decoration were tattoos or
paintings of intricate patterns on hands
and palms in bright orange henna. This
tradition continues to this day, embodying
the original nuances of seduction
and aphrodisiac properties. Drawing
inspiration from this ancient tradition,
Casato has created unusual hand jewels
as part of its latest collections. Emphasis
is given on delicate patterns and subtle
seduction. An example is the 18K rose
gold and diamond Daphne bracelet ring

t a very young age, Arto
Artinian already knew a
thing or two about high
jewellery. Growing up
in a family of Armenian
jewellers, he and his
brother Saro used to watch their father
sort and assemble diamonds. “It was so
much fun for us then, not knowing how
valuable the little stones were,” he shares.
The brothers would also go around
their father’s workshop and watch how
the artisans used to shape gold and set
stones. “It was just all so exciting for us.
We wanted to learn more, explore more,
and reach the mastery of the bench.”
Today, with his own jewellery company,
Artinian did not only master the art
of producing high jewellery, he had
developed a real respect for the art and

I had just finished my studies in Cyprus
when I came back to join my father’s

design is an internal process, I believe
that we are a very market-led company;
and our design process is always the
starting point of pending success of the

next season. I place huge importance

market expectation and recreating
our collections, lines, and
design elements a few steps
beyond those expectations.

INSPIRATIONS FROM?
Life is inspiring all around us.
People are inspirational. Of course,
nature and our ordinary routines are
inspirational, too. Moments of reflection,
sudden bursts of ideas endow us with
their inspiring moments and experiences.
As a CEO of an innovation-led company,
I admit that chasing inspirations is in our
thinking. At Artinian, we are constantly
searching for new inspirations. Visibly,
the recurrent design drifts of life play a
critical role. Other sources of inspirations
are private travels, architecture and, of
course, the colourful, emotional moments
and lifestyles of our everyday lives.

First, we have really studied the market

have created a very interesting line, which

independently. So, we create our new
collections to match their lifestyles.

love at a design school,
Michael Koh and Achillea
Teng are in sync creatively
ever since. The husband-
and-wife tandem poured
their individual expertise and shared passion
into jewellery creations, culminating in the

and geometric, while Teng’s tends towards
simplicity.
The diversity sits well under the Caratell
umbrella, held together by the choice
and cut of gemstones and the quality of
workmanship. Apparent in the collections
is a shared devotion to rare gemstones.

 Recently, the couple’s passion for the
art was channelled into the Impressionist
and Cubism collections. Van Gogh’s Irises
and Monet’s Lilies have been translated into
colourful necklaces and pendants. Picasso’s
works are the inspiration behind the Cubism
collection, comprising design patterns that
appear “broken down and re-assembled”.
Both Koh and Teng dislike picking a
favourite among their collections — “It’s
like asking a father to pick a favourite child,”
Koh says. But when urged, he will quietly
share that Cubism is his favourite. “It took
me more than three months to understand
and apply the philosophy of ‘deconstruct to
reconstruct’ in cubism into our jewellery.” He
chose flowers as his object of deconstruction
and is thrilled with the outcome.
In addition to strong design innovation,
Caratell’s success lies on new techniques
for all aspects of production, from technical
to mechanical to lapidary work. One of the
brand’s biggest assets is the lapidary for
gemstone cutting. The Verge collection owes
its success to the unconventional cutting
that features gemstones with intact natural
inclusions, while the setting is designed to
follow the contours of each unique gemstone
shape. Gemstone carving, too, finds a place
in some pieces, with the Angel line featuring
clouds carved from aquamarine rough.
KOH’S APPROACH IS

WHILE TENG’S TRENDS
TOWARDS SIMPLICITY

handmade at Caratell’s
Singapore workshop. Most are
in 18K gold and, recently, in titanium.
Koh confesses that getting recognition as
a designer jewellery brand in Singapore is
not easy. “Consumers do not consider art
and design as Singapore’s leading creative
strengths, so we have to work extra hard to
showcase our products.”
The positive response from customers
both in Singapore and overseas to the Iconic

Collection was a pleasant surprise, and
helped affirm their position as a designer
jewellery brand. “Our overseas customers,,
particularly those who were impressed
with Singapore’s new architectural icons,
bought items from the collection as a form

of wearable art, and some as meaningful
mementos of their visit.”

plendid with its graphic style,
brilliant colours, and outsize
proportions, Hermès new fine
jewellery collection mystifies
with its enigmatic name. The
HB-IV Continuum refers to
the fourth Haute Bijouterie to emerge from
Hermès. Pierre Hardy, who has headed
jewellery design at the French House for
the past 15 years, created another highly
inventive collection in his quest to develop
the “total jewellery expression” for Hermès.
“I wanted to create the equivalent of the
Kelly or Birkin [bags] so I searched in many
different ways how to transform the aesthetic
vocabulary of the house into jewellery
pieces,” he explained. The collection features
12 ‘modules’ or ‘sequences’ that blend haute
bijouterie with jewellery in gold or silver.
The high jewellery component consists of
three of these modules, and exhibits the best
traditions of Hardy’s Haute Bijouterie in
the scale, opulence, and complexity of their
ambitions.
Colour is the big draw of this collection,
evoking time’s ephemeral yet eternal
nature, and expressed in the most varied
and precious rainbow of pearls, diamonds,
and precious gems. “This year, the fact
that I wanted to talk about the idea of the
dynamics of time, the movement of time,
the speed, the cycles, pushed me to explore
all the different shades of reflected light
through the colours of the stones,” said
Hardy.
Trends in costume jewellery also played
an influence on form, as witnessed by the
presence in the collection of the wide-cuff
bracelet, choker, and two-finger ring — all
current street- and party-wear favourites.
Hardy, who also designs shoes, bags, perfume
bottles, and other accessories, has always
been one to push the limits of whatever
he does. A fellow designer who has known

him for 20 years, said of Hardy: “With

jewellery sets reflects its
core theme in its name.
Ombres et Lumière, French
for Light and Shade, delves
into the interplay of textures,
materials, and volumes so
beloved of Hardy. The dramatic
necklace captures the flow of time in
subtle gradations of light to dark and light
again through white Akoya and South Sea
pearls, as it sits in a bold, elegant twirl on the
décolleté. The bracelet in the set is one of
the most compelling pieces in the collection
with its sensual volumes and its white Akoya
and grey Tahitian pearls, evoking the fading

central to the HB-IV Continuum range, the
ring is in the shape of the infinity ‘figure-
eight’ symbol. Made of rose gold and worn
across two fingers, it is set with white Akoya
and grey Tahitian pearls.
The second set, Feux de Ciel
(Light of the Sky) celebrates the
mercurial colours of the sky. In
the choker, 1,460 iolites, garnets,
tourmalines, and topazes have
been meticulously set into seven
flexible lines of white gold,
creating a rippling effect as the
red, pink, violet, orange, and green
flow one into the other, evoking
the soft shades of dawn. A similar
palette of gems, set again into white
gold, is cut and positioned in seven
rows on the wrist to create the Feux de Ciel
bracelet. Dawn seems to break for all eternity
in shimmering waves over the wearer’s skin
with this bracelet — as it does with the ring
in the set, whose three bands are set with
tourmalines, garnets, iolites, and topazes in
white gold.
The third set is named after the golden
chariot that in Greek myths draws the sun
across the sky. With Attelage Celeste (Heavenly
Carriage), Hardy reinvents the wheel, so
to speak, with pieces whose central motif
can be seen as a spoked wheel or a sundial.
The highlight is a pendant in the shape
of a square with rounded corners, in the
centre of which sits a 32ct rosy pink opal of sunshine-bright yellow gold, enhanced with
the exact same shape. Spokes radiate out an imperial topaz and 2,074 diamonds, and a

ow does any centuries-old
company stay relevant
today, let alone one
addressing the fickle
luxury lifestyle market?
It’s a question many have
wrestled with, one that is made ever more
urgent by ageing legacy markets, economic
and political instability, and the ascent of a
new generation of consumers with different
tastes and buying habits.
For Garrard, founded in 1735 and one
of the world’s oldest jewellery houses, the
question is pertinent. Their answer lies in
both quality and design, but also in another
layer unique to Garrard — its British-ness;
its heritage. “People want so much more now,
when investing in a piece of jewellery,” says
Joanne Milner, who joined the company as
CEO in January 2016. “I think that key word

— investment — is important, because you
need to be able to trust the brand and trust
that what you’re investing in is the highest
quality.”
Milner has a valid point, amplified by
her background in private equity and
corporate finance, as well as a track record
of transforming businesses. In 2014, prior
to joining Garrard, she helped revitalise
another 18th century company — specialist
publisher Debrett’s. Milner led its global
expansion and broadened the scope of its
activities.
Apart from ensuring the quality of its
stones and craftsmanship — an assurance
provided by the brand’s history as the
British Crown Jeweller from 1843 to 2007
— Garrard is connecting with modern-
day wearers by adapting designs from its
heritage. The Albemarle collection, for

instance, takes inspiration from a tiara dating

back to 1893 and featuring a diamond-and-
dot design. This design is manifested in the
collection’s white gold jewellery, including
a headdress, statement necklace, earrings,
rings, and bracelets.
The Entanglement collection, on the
other hand, was inspired by the Cambridge
Lover’s Knot tiara, which Garrard made in
1914 to Queen Mary’s design. It’s also a
tiara that the Duchess of Cambridge Kate
Middleton likes to wear, as did the late
Princess Diana, and is thus recognisable to
both younger and older clients.
For younger consumers, there’s the
Twentyfour collection, a diffusion line from
Albemarle. The name references the brand’s
flagship store, located at 24 Albemarle Street
in Mayfair, London, as well as the fact that
the pieces in the collection are wearable 24
hours a day. These are jewels you would buy
for your grandchildren if you’re already a
Garrard wearer, says Milner, or that would
help new clients make their first Garrard
investment.

Garrard style],” she says. This means, for one,
drawing people to their flagship boutique

clients, or jewellery-loving tourists. Asian
consumers visiting the UK, in fact, are
among the brand’s biggest growth market.
The company hosts afternoon tea for clients
in the boutique’s Queen Mary Room, where
the queen first tried on her Garrard-made
consort crown. Visitors can browse through
jewellery archives and tour the workshop to
see designers and craftsmen in action.
Milner hopes to expand Garrard’s
bespoke services by working with partners
and having its designers visit clients in
different countries, to design unique pieces.
These would then be created in the London
workshop. Not only does this demonstrate
the company’s capacity to create bespoke
jewellery, it also reinforces its heritage as a
custom designer and family jeweller, and the
sense of ‘experiencing’ the Garrard brand.

Audemars Piguet X Sun Xun for Art Basel Miami

Audemars Piguet unveiled Reconstruction of the Universe for the

second Audemars Piguet Art Commission in November last year
at Art Basel in Miami. The artwork is a large-scale installation by
Chinese artist Sun Xun, spanning the length of a city block on the
Miami Beach oceanfront. Constructed with curved bamboo, the
pavilion stands out against the night sky in an asymmetrical shape,
best viewed when illuminated in white lights. In celebration of the
launch, Audemars Piguet hosted a cocktail party which was attended
by 1,100 guests including brand ambassador Serena Williams and
actress Katie Holmes. The Sun Xun and AP partnership stemmed
from the artist’s first visit to the brand’s manufacture in Le Brassus,
reflecting similar creative and technical excellence in his artwork.
The party was complemented with the finest champagne by
Pommery and musical entertainment by French DJ Martin Solveig
on the decks.

Fans and friends of Franck Muller were invited to a premiere of

the brand’s pre-World Presentation of Haute Horlogerie (WPHH)
2017 novelties held at its flagship boutique in Wisma Atria,

Gems Pavilion celebrates 20 years with a
new collection

Unveiling their latest Iconic Collection and new flagship boutique

in celebration of their 20th Anniversary, Gems Pavilion hosted
a star-studded VIP event, which saw celebrities and esteemed
clientele in attendance. The new space housed at Siam Paragon
adopts a classical and lavish impression decorated with soft, muted
tones and fluid curves. Carpeted floors and plush sofas add subtle
contrast to the reflective walls and a central sparkling chandelier,
with the addition of floral accents. Surrounding the theme, the
Iconic Collection is a series of white gold and diamond creations
that oversees a medley of marquise, baguette, round and emerald
diamonds, arranged one against the other.

CHARITY BEGINS WITH ART

Bvlgari presents architectural jewellery

Bvlgari by Bulgari introduced its new B.zero1 Design Legend jewellery

during the Miami Art & Design Week in December last year. The
ring and pendant set was designed in collaboration with the late
architect Zaha Hadid who was inspired by the undulated forms
of the Roman Colosseum. Available in four versions, the ring is
designed with four stacked bands using white or black ceramic
and pink, yellow, or white gold with a diamond setting. In similar
fashion, the four-band pendant is designed in pink gold. American
performer Madonna also hosted her Raising Malawi VIP charity
event in conjunction with Bvlgari’s B.zero1 Design Legend launch, as
part of their latest charity partnership. Bvlgari donated an 18K white
gold and diamond pavé Serpentini necklace, which was auctioned

alentine’s Day or not, very
few shapes elicit warmth and
joy like a heart does. From
pendants to balloons, they
convey affection and happy
moments. Now imagine a
huge diamond shaped like one, displaying
exceptional colour and clarity, and you have an
ultimate tribute to our industry.
Late last year, Graff Diamonds presented
a 118.78ct D Flawless heart-shaped diamond
and called it The Graff Venus, one of the world’s
largest, if not the largest one of its kind.
From analysis to examination, to cutting and
polishing, the whole process took more than
18 months to finish.
The risks were inherent, not only due
to the diamond’s size, but because of the
desired shape, making the stone more prone
to possible damage. From a 357ct rough stone
discovered in the Letšeng mine in South
Africa, the diamond was cut and faceted
— paying close attention to silhouette and
scintillation — into a symmetrical heart-shaped,
GIA-certified stunner.
“I am proud to say that we delivered the
very best,” shares Laurence Graff, Graff
Diamonds’ founder. “The Graff Venus is beyond
words. It is the most beautiful heart-shaped
diamond I have ever seen.”
