DAILY
DIAMONDS
D
iamonds are luxurious, unique, and often
unattainable. Yet the hardest stone known to us is
intricately woven into our daily lives — with much
more yet to come.
Scientists at Stanford University have discovered
a way to use diamondoids — the smallest possible bits of diamond
— to assemble atoms “Lego-style” into the thinnest possible
electrical wires, just three atoms wide. A wide range of applications
will arise, such as fabrics to generate electricity, or optoelectronic
devices that employ both electricity and light.
Next is the ability of diamonds to conduct electricity without
loss, and with it, the growing use of diamonds as a replacement for
silicon in semiconductors. Those familiar with the industry will
know the limitations imposed on “Moore’s Law” by the problem
“ON THE of heat generated by silicon. Diamond-based semiconductors do
DIFFICULT away with that.
This and the range of other applications where diamonds are
DAYS, WHEN useful is about to bring on what many now call the Dawn of a
Diamond Age. To satisfy such an industrial “diamond rush”, the
THE WORLD’S supply of naturally sourced diamonds will not be sufficient.
ON YOUR Other ready and consistent sources will need to be found, and
lab-grown diamonds come to the fore. It is a development that may
SHOULDERS, severely disrupt current market forces in the jewellery industry.
Like it or not, man-made or laboratory-grown diamonds are here,
REMEMBER THAT a lot more are coming, and they are here to stay.
DIAMONDS ARE Many questions loom. Will jewellery lovers accept lab-grown
diamonds in their keepsake jewellery? Will a prospective bride
MADE UNDER accept a lab-grown diamond in an engagement ring? Will the
industry heed basic ethics by declaring lab-grown diamonds as
THE WEIGHT OF such? The list goes on.
MOUNTAINS.” For now, though, nothing shines grander and more lasting than
a beautifully-cut natural diamond, set in a beautifully-designed
— BEAU TAPLIN, piece of unique jewellery. Like the hundreds of examples shown in
this edition of Solitaire.
AUTHOR We hope you enjoy them all.

YOU TURNED 41 THIS PAST YEAR.

HOW DRAMATIC WAS IT FOR YOU?
We think about all the things that we
lose, like the elasticity in our skin, but
we don’t think about the things that we
gain. And I think that’s the stuff that we
don’t write about enough. With age comes
this calm understanding of just knowing
yourself better and knowing the world
better, and really fitting in your shoes
and fitting in your skin and having great
ownership. I never had that in my ‘20s. So,
I am excited. How fortunate are we that
we get to age? A lot of people don’t have
that luxury. So I am grateful for that, to be
alive and healthy.

BUT FOR A BEAUTIFUL ACTRESS

LIKE YOURSELF, ISN’T IT SCARY TO
BE AGEING IN HOLLYWOOD?
I think ageing is not just a Hollywood
thing. It’s ironic that we’ve built the
beauty world around 20-year-olds
— when they have no concept about
wisdom, about what life is about — having
a few relationships under their belt, to
grow into their skin and feel confident
within themselves and to feel the value
of who they are, not because of a man. I
think that’s such a beautiful thing. That’s
why I think people say women come into
their prime in their 40s. It would be very
hard to deny that it is much harder for
women to age in any society than it is for
men. I think Hollywood has always got a
little spotlight on it. Cosmetic companies
make their money not from Hollywood
but from women from everywhere, buying
“I HAVE A LITTLE YELLOW GOLD their products because they have been
told and they have believed for so long
ONOUR OF MY
‘J ’ IN INITIAL IN HONOUR what is their value and what we can give

SON, JACKSON” to society is all set in what we look like.

And in a way we’ve done that to ourselves.
But what does that mean? What does that
represent?
re Ageing isn’t just about looking
in the mirror and going, wow, I’m getting
old.
ol It doesn’t meant I’m less valuable
to myself, to my community. I think it’s
up to us to change that, to put our value
in things that are bigger and actually
tangible. Ageing is inevitable. This is
ta
something we’re all going to have to face.

ICE QUEENS
A BRILLIANT TAKE ON HAUTE HORLOGERIE

Graff
Instead of just having a butterfly design on the case, Graff offers a secret jewellery watch. While the case
is a stunning rendition of a butterfly paved with diamonds and outlined by tapered baguette diamonds,
the watch incorporates an innovative hidden mechanism that springs open the wings to reveal a 12mm
watch with mother-of-pearl dial. The all-diamond model of the Princess Butterfly comes with a bracelet
comprising four alternating flowing and interwoven lines of pave baguette and brilliant round diamonds.

I
t takes skilled watchmakers, cutters, gem-setters, and hundreds of hours to
breathe life into each bejewelled timepiece; to make sure every one becomes
a singular, harmonious expression of technical prowess, luxury, and beauty.
Diamonds, the hardest stone known, are particularly difficult to work with for
watchmakers. But the following brands have risen to the challenge with floral
motifs, three-dimensional designs, exceptional cuts, and innovative setting
techniques to create sensational timepieces.

Backes & Strauss

A 19th century brooch with two linked
hearts was the inspiration for the Victoria
Princess diamond watch by Backes &
Strauss. This timepiece by one of the world's
oldest diamond companies features an

Parmigiani Fleurier
The devil is in the details for Parmigiani
Fleurier’s Tonda 1950 watch. A closer look
at the dial reveals five different sizes of
round diamonds, all carefully assembled
and set in a white gold case. Its complexity
lies in the arrangement of the 620
diamonds, starting with the smallest at the
centre, followed by larger ones and more
smaller ones on the outside. The result is
not only a stunning ensemble of light, but
one that allows the dial to appear domed de Griso

Hermès
Hermès has taken the architectural path for its new Médor Secrète
watch, inspired by the pointed studs on the dog collars that
the brand used to make in its early days. The bold, angular
walls of the pyramids lend a graphic, contemporary vibe to
the timepiece, which encircles the wrist with thousands
of diamonds — 4,379 to be exact. The diamonds are
snow-set in white gold to create a continuous, sparkling
field of light. Press a special push-button and one
unlocks the lid to reveal a quartz-powered watch
with white lacquered dial and four pyramid-shaped
hour markers. Even the crown is positioned at the
caseback for a seamless look.

DIAMONDS ARE PARTICULARLY DIFFICULT

TO WORK WITH FOR WATCHMAKERS

Vacheron Constantin
Unlike round diamonds, baguette-cut diamonds are typically used as accents on a
piece of jewellery or timepiece as they have less sparkle. But Vacheron Constantin
demonstrates its craftsmanship, skill, and dedication to quality by using an array
of baguette-cut diamonds throughout the Traditionnelle High Jewellery timepiece,
including the white gold case, dial, and bracelet. They are arranged in such a way that
they radiate from the centre of the dial. Available in two sizes of 40mm and 35mm,
each model features a manual-winding in-house movement that can be admired
through the sapphire crystal caseback.

onceived as an evocative

the new high jewellery
range from De Beers is a warm, sentimental
tribute to the brand’s founding city. Named
‘London by De Beers,’ the collection draws
its inspiration from the winding course of
the river that intersects the British capital,
and the silhouettes of four of its architectural
landmarks.
In 2001, De Beers opened its first De
Beers Diamond Jewellers at 45 Old Bond
Street, later expanding the concept to 18
countries worldwide. “We are proud to
call London our home, and to introduce
our first collection designed as a tribute to
our brand’s founding city,” says François
Delage, CEO of De Beers. “These
unique pieces have been created to
encapsulate the magical light that
dances on these iconic landmarks
and reflects on the majestic
Thames, bringing to life the
unique spirit of London.”
There are five matching sets
to the collection, with a recent
addition to the London skyline
lending its distinctive circular
charisma to one of the sets.
‘London View’ consists of earrings,
ring, and necklace, evoking the
London Eye and its 360-degree
panoramic views of the city. The
modernistic shape of the passenger
capsules of the giant Ferris wheel is
captured in the use of marquise cuts.
Meanwhile, the Toi et Moi style of the pieces

The tower that houses the world’s

for the next set of jewellery. The tower was
completed in 1859 as St Stephen’s Tower
and renamed Elizabeth Tower in 2012
to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

The pendant can be detached and

scientifically demonstrate the quality of its
diamonds through the so-called De Beers
Iris, a proprietary technology found in each
De Beers store that provides clients with
an objective way to see the beauty of their
diamond through the eyes of an expert.
‘Battersea Light’ brings back the glory
days of the Battersea Power Station in a
stunning set of earrings, necklace, and ring.
Echoing the powerful Art Deco architecture
of the old, decommissioned power station,
the pieces feature a selection of robustly
elegant angular cuts. For example, the
soaring, dramatic chimneys of the building
are reflected in the single orderly drop of
diamonds in the necklace, culminating in
a magnificent detachable 10.92ct D colour
emerald-cut diamond. The gems of the
necklace are set using the highly demanding
micro-pavé bezel technique by the master
craftsmen of De Beers; and the piece can be
worn in multiple ways.
Albert Bridge, constructed in 1873, is the
inspiration for the set of the same name, EACH DE BEERS DIAMOND

earrings. An assembly of oval, marquise,

ALL THAT GLITTERS, FROM INDIA TO THE WORLD

While the world was reeling in the

2009 recession and diamond prices were
in a slump, Modi aggressively bought
many substantial pieces. Call it luck or
foresightedness, his gamble paid off. But
unlike others who may have simply resold
the stones, Modi took to setting them in
stunning designs. “Growing up in a family
of diamond manufacturers, my entire
childhood was surrounded by precious
gems,” he shares. “I was fascinated with rare
diamonds. I spent a lot of time with jewellery
craftsmen, which eventually inspired me to
create one-of-a-kind designs and strive for
excellence.”
One of his important pieces is the
Golconda necklace that graced the cover page
of Christie’s 2010 Catalogue — a first for an
Indian jeweller. The necklace is embedded

intense and fancy vivid, can fetch astronomical prices.
Records for coloured diamonds sold at auction are
continuously broken, both in ‘per carat’ prices and the

The reason for this is, of course, rarity. Other than near-
colourless diamonds, which are rather plentiful, an intense coloured
diamond is exceptional. For every 10,000 diamonds found, only one
showcases a beautiful colour — even more priceless if the diamond
exhibits an even distribution of hue, and is of a certain size.

ROSE QUARTZ

LOVE
STONE
THE ROSE QUARTZ EVOKES BEAUTY AND ROMANCE

82
K
nown as the stone of
unconditional love, the
rose quartz is said to
give off calming energy
and a sense of inner
peace. It evokes beauty
and romance, allowing
oneself to be open for love. Also referred
to by many as “pink quartz”, its colour
ranges from very pale pink to rose red
due to the varying amounts of titanium,
iron, or manganese. Mostly opaque, the
rose quartz’s colour often appears milky,
cloudy, or hazy, which deepens the shade
and lends a slight adularescence effect,
best described as a milky lustre or glow
originating from below the surface of the
gemstone.
Apart from its use in jewellery, the rose
quartz is also a very attractive ornamental
stone, and is frequently carved into
figurines and ornate statues. With its
soothing quality, this tranquil gemstone
suits most people’s personalities, said to
encourage sensitivity, compassion, and
trust. Stripping away all negativity, the
stone enhances self-love and self-worth,
as one is said to love himself first in order
to receive love from others.
First records of the rose quartz date

Serenity, the jewellery fraternity suddenly
took notice. With the whole fashion
world leaning towards soft, pastel shades
once again, the rose quartz was back on
trend. Easy on the eyes, it reminds us of
soft winter mornings when set in rose
gold, like the pieces in the Rose Dior
Pré Catelan collection, where delicate
carved rose quartz rose flowers make for
charming rings and pendants. Carved rose
quartz has been an instant inspiration for
many, including the Lily of the Valley floral

Rose quartz is easy to pair with other
gemstones, as evidenced by the pink

gold and diamonds. As the passing of time is
central to the HB-IV Continuum range, the
ring is in the shape of the infinity ‘figure-
eight’ symbol. Made of rose gold and worn
across two fingers, it is set with white Akoya
and grey Tahitian pearls.
The second set, Feux de Ciel
(Light of the Sky) celebrates the
mercurial colours of the sky. In
the choker, 1,460 iolites, garnets,
tourmalines, and topazes have
been meticulously set into seven
flexible lines of white gold,
creating a rippling effect as the
red, pink, violet, orange, and green
flow one into the other, evoking
the soft shades of dawn. A similar
palette of gems, set again into white
gold, is cut and positioned in seven
rows on the wrist to create the Feux de Ciel
bracelet. Dawn seems to break for all eternity
in shimmering waves over the wearer’s skin
with this bracelet — as it does with the ring
in the set, whose three bands are set with
tourmalines, garnets, iolites, and topazes in
white gold.
The third set is named after the golden
chariot that in Greek myths draws the sun
across the sky. With Attelage Celeste (Heavenly
Carriage), Hardy reinvents the wheel, so
to speak, with pieces whose central motif
can be seen as a spoked wheel or a sundial.
The highlight is a pendant in the shape
of a square with rounded corners, in the
centre of which sits a 32ct rosy pink opal of sunshine-bright yellow gold, enhanced with
the exact same shape. Spokes radiate out an imperial topaz and 2,074 diamonds, and a

collection’s white gold jewellery, including
a headdress, statement necklace, earrings,

The Entanglement collection, on the
other hand, was inspired by the Cambridge
Lover’s Knot tiara, which Garrard made in
1914 to Queen Mary’s design. It’s also a
tiara that the Duchess of Cambridge Kate
Middleton likes to wear, as did the late
Princess Diana, and is thus recognisable to
both younger and older clients.
For younger consumers, there’s the

in Mayfair, London, as well as the fact that
the pieces in the collection are wearable 24

Audemars Piguet X Sun Xun for Art Basel Miami

Audemars Piguet unveiled Reconstruction of the Universe for the

second Audemars Piguet Art Commission in November last year
at Art Basel in Miami. The artwork is a large-scale installation by
Chinese artist Sun Xun, spanning the length of a city block on the
Miami Beach oceanfront. Constructed with curved bamboo, the
pavilion stands out against the night sky in an asymmetrical shape,
best viewed when illuminated in white lights. In celebration of the
launch, Audemars Piguet hosted a cocktail party which was attended
by 1,100 guests including brand ambassador Serena Williams and
actress Katie Holmes. The Sun Xun and AP partnership stemmed
from the artist’s first visit to the brand’s manufacture in Le Brassus,
reflecting similar creative and technical excellence in his artwork.
The party was complemented with the finest champagne by
Pommery and musical entertainment by French DJ Martin Solveig
on the decks.

and Cintrée Curvex Moonphase. The highlight piece, introduced by Mr
Rudaz as the “hero piece” of the world premiere, was the Vanguard
Skeleton Gravity which captivated audiences with its tourbillon
complication and openworked hands. Amidst champagne and
canapés, festive-themed bespoke cocktails entertained guests. The
world premiere collection had its official presentation at Franck
Muller Watchland in Geneva in January.

WHY ARE WE HERE?
It is perhaps the most important question we have ever asked.
And possibly the most difficult to answer.

Trees as we know produce oxygen.

Birds and insects pollinate the plants that feed us.

We know that some animals need plants to survive.

And some animals need animals.

Giant whales couldn’t survive without tiny plankton.

Giant trees couldn’t survive without insects.

But could life on this planet survive without us?

WHAT IS OUR PURPOSE?

Of all the species that share this world, we are
the only one with the power to protect the entire planet.

The only one with the power to protect every species on this earth.
Including ourselves. Every species is here for a purpose.

And each of us has a part to play.

CHARITY BEGINS WITH ART

Bvlgari presents architectural jewellery

Bvlgari by Bulgari introduced its new B.zero1 Design Legend jewellery

during the Miami Art & Design Week in December last year. The
ring and pendant set was designed in collaboration with the late
architect Zaha Hadid who was inspired by the undulated forms
of the Roman Colosseum. Available in four versions, the ring is
designed with four stacked bands using white or black ceramic
and pink, yellow, or white gold with a diamond setting. In similar
fashion, the four-band pendant is designed in pink gold. American
performer Madonna also hosted her Raising Malawi VIP charity
event in conjunction with Bvlgari’s B.zero1 Design Legend launch, as
part of their latest charity partnership. Bvlgari donated an 18K white
gold and diamond pavé Serpentini necklace, which was auctioned
off at the event, with all proceeds towards Raising Malawi. [Images by

THE GRAFF VENUS

HEART OF

alentine’s Day or not, very
few shapes elicit warmth and
joy like a heart does. From
pendants to balloons, they
convey affection and happy
moments. Now imagine a
huge diamond shaped like one, displaying
exceptional colour and clarity, and you have an
ultimate tribute to our industry.
Late last year, Graff Diamonds presented
a 118.78ct D Flawless heart-shaped diamond
and called it The Graff Venus, one of the world’s
largest, if not the largest one of its kind.
From analysis to examination, to cutting and
polishing, the whole process took more than
18 months to finish.
The risks were inherent, not only due
to the diamond’s size, but because of the
desired shape, making the stone more prone
to possible damage. From a 357ct rough stone
discovered in the Letšeng mine in South
Africa, the diamond was cut and faceted
— paying close attention to silhouette and
scintillation — into a symmetrical heart-shaped,
GIA-certified stunner.
“I am proud to say that we delivered the
very best,” shares Laurence Graff, Graff
Diamonds’ founder. “The Graff Venus is beyond
words. It is the most beautiful heart-shaped
diamond I have ever seen.”
