PRE- INTERMEDIATE BUSINESS ENGLISH (Module II)

Course Description:
The course is to designed to enlarge your knowledge of business world and develop the essential
communication and language skills needed in business contexts. It aims to build competence, fluency and
confidence in learners in handling telephoning, socializing, negotiating, meetings and presentations…

Course objectives

1. Knowledge objectives:
During the course, the learners are supposed to:
- Get a rather large stock of vocabulary relating to New business; Marketing; Planning;
Managing people; Conflict
- Have chances to review and do a lot of exercises in order to enforce their language
knowledge in terms of word partnerships, reported speech, future tenses,
conditionals, time clauses….
- Get better understanding of some common business topics: Marketing; Planning;
Managing people; Conflict

2. Skills Objectives:
During the course, the learners are supposed to:
- Improve their reading skill by applying variety of reading tactics such as skimming,
scanning, reading for gist, speed reading, intensive reading…
- Practise their communicative competence in telephoning, meetings, socializing and
entertaining, negotiating….
- Enhance their listening comprehension.
- Better their writing business skill through writing tasks like writing an email of enquiry,
writing replies and quotation…

Course Requirements:

Attendance & Participation


Students are expected to attend all classes and complete all course requirements. Excused absences are
those accompanied by a department office’s note. Each unexcused absence results in a deduction of 1
point.

Please set your cell phone onto the silent mode before class begins.

Students are expected to take an active role in class activities and remember your contribution to the
activities benefits everyone including you. Those who have great contribution may get bonus grade at the
end of the course.
Group work
Students are expected to work in group and you are supposed to make a presentation. Your work will be
critiqued in terms of content, organization, effectiveness, preparation, delivery and teamwork skills.

Your formative grade (50%) will be based on:

Attendance: 20%
LMS: 20%
Group work: 20%
Mid-term test: 10%
Speaking test: 30%
