Plantable Food Wraps from Corn Husk

The waste humans generate has been detrimental to the environment for quite some time
now. According to the 2021 report of the World Bank Organization, the Philippines generates a
staggering 9.7 million tons of plastic waste annually and 20 percent of which winds up in the
ocean, mostly are unrecyclable single used sachet and food wraps.

Traditionally, food wraps are mostly made up of plastics. Plastic wraps like cling film,
and polymers are in-biodegradable therefore, increasing the problem in plastic pollution.

A plantable food wrap is a type of food packaging made of a post-industrial material that
has an embedded different plant seeds that can germinate after use instead of being thrown away.

This study has conducted to determine the feasibility of a seed germinating from the food
wraps made up from corn husks and involves experimental method. A 100 grams of dried corn
husk was boiled with 50 ml solution of sodium hydroxide (liquid sosa) for an hour until the husk
are tender enough to break apart. It was then strained and transferred in a blender, with the seed
to achieved pure corn husks pulp.

Three types of vegetable seeds (tomato, eggplant, and snow cabbage or pechay) were
added to the corn husk pulp. The pulp was then molded using a screen frame and was left under
the sun to dry for several days.

The plantable wraps were planted and observed for two weeks. Among the six samples,
each containing with five seeds each, were planted. Sample A germinated two seeds, Sample B
also grew two seeds while Sample C only had one. Sample D, E and F grew two seeds, and three
seeds out of five respectively. In summary, all of the samples were able to germinate the seeds
embedded to the food package.

To test the durability and the amount of time the food package can contain the different
types of food ( dry foods, food with thick sauce, and liquid-like foods ). The plantable food
packaging can also contain dry foods in 60 minutes, food with thick sauce was contained for 25-
40 minutes, and liquid-like food can only be contained for only one minute at most.

This indicates that the plantable food wraps although can contain dry foods, it was
discovered to be easily destroyed with wet goods with the absence of bio-plastic layer in
comparison to commercial food packaging.
In conclusion, plantable food wraps from corn husk has the potential to be a substitute to
other food packaging which will later on reduce waste ; and corn husks make an excellent
substitute for traditional packaging materials for dry light-weight goods.
The Temperature Rises, The Passion Burns

Prior to the intense heat that everyone is currently experiencing, I am a student who
struggled personally. The people around me screams suspension of classes and everyone is in a
precaucious state. We, as a student, we should be passionate, responsible, and diligent enough to
face any circumstances that we would meet in the world of academic challenges. Some leaners
struggle with time management, parental expectations and pressure, deadlines, and exam, while
others battles other forms of academic stress. The intense heat is just another issue that needs to
be addressed. We should overcome this problem because it is inevitable. It is something we
should bear in comparison to other struggles. Because what’s more important? Achieving the
meets and expectations that were set to you as a student? Or addressing the needs of your well-
being during hot times like this? Which one should we prioritize?
It is believed that schools that have closed due to extreme weather may not make up for
the lost times with remote teaching and learning. Despite being modular and giving school works
at home, students won’t have enough motivation to accomplish their activities, because students
have different duties at home and different environments. Besides, educational institution are not
only prone of likely to experience hot weather.
Regardless of the struggle with the rise of temperature. Students are ignited with passion
and the ideas are burning when they are inside school. There, they have the desirability to get
their work done. Compared to online and modular leaning, face-to-face learning provides in-
person benefits that the two method lacks. Learning with your peers, in the same room, foster a
sense of learning that is physical. Face-to-face learning allows instructors to develop one on one
learning plans and relationships with learners that cant be replicated online. Moreover, being a
part of an in-person group provides nuance that online learning can’t replicate. There reasons
fuels learners to prefer continuing face-to-face classes amidst the extreme weather.
Instead of shifting from full modular classes, I believe it is better to push through the
continuation of face-to-face classes, since pure modular has been proven ineffective, that we
have learning gaps now. It is true that health is wealth and we must consider the well-being of
every students at time of dry season. The face-to-face classes should keep going. Students should
continue to effectively and efficiently, Beat the heat with burning passion and determination.

Heat : A Serious Threat to Human Health

The number of people exposed to extreme heat is growing exponentially due to climate
change in all region, All around the world, the intensity of heat waves are observed with the
occurring climate changes,
During extreme heat, it is easy to become dehydrated or for your body to overheat. If this
happens, you may develop heat crams, heat exhaustion, or even worse, heat stroke. Extreme heat
can also make existing medical condition worse.
Every individual should always carry a water bottle and drink water to stay adequately
hydrated. People should refrain from going outside, if they must go but wearing hat or carrying
an umbrella and applying sunscreen is essential
Awareness remain insufficient, the health risks posed by heat waves and prolonged
exposure to increased temperatures. Practical, feasible and low-cost interventions at individuals
can save lives.

Life

Can you hear it, the pulses of the living

The erratic rhythm, is a grand orchestra
Who wants to stop this?
There cant be anyone!

Days are passing like seconds

Holding nothing of importance
Seeing everthing, everywhere
More beautiful than ever

When the violent storm

Is finally over
The blue sky
Is more beautiful than ever

You see,
I want that!
I want that!
That’s all I want!

It took me six years, to find an answer.

I forgot about it, five seconds after
That’s about it
