b) Three ammeter method

a). Measurement of parameters of a choke coil using three voltmeter method

Aim:

To compute the inductance of a given choke coil using 3 voltmeter method.

Apparatus required:

Apparatus Specifications Quantity

Rheostat 50Ω,5A 2
Voltmeter (0-300)V, MI 3
Ammeter (0-5)A, MI 1
Auto transformer 230V,5A 1

Circuit Diagram:
Procedure:

 Make the connections as per the given circuit diagram and close the DPST switch.
 Vary the autotransformer to get 230V across voltmeter V1.
 Measure the voltages and current for different values of the input voltage.
 Reduce the input voltage using the autotransformer and repeat the procedure for different
voltage values.
 Calculate the power and power factor for each set using the corresponding equations.
 Calculate each case's coil resistance and inductance and find the average value to detect
the coil resistance and inductance.

Sl no. V1 V2 V3 I Power Power factor Coil resistance Coil Inductance
(V) (V) (V) (A) (W) ( Ω) (H)

Calculation:

V12 = V22+V32+2V2V3 cosɸ

𝑉12 −𝑉22 −𝑉32

Cos ɸ =
2∗𝑉2 ∗𝑉3
Power in the coil = V3I cosɸ
Power loss in the choke coil=Ir
V3I cos ɸ = Ir
Therefore choke coil resistance = r =V3/I cos ɸ
Impedence of the coil= Z =V3/I
Coil reactance = XL = Z-r
Coil Inductance = XL / 2*pi*f
b). Measurement of parameters of a choke coil using three ammeter method

Aim:

To compute the inductance of a given choke coil using 3 ammeter method.

Apparatus required:

Calculation:

I12 = I22+I32+2I2I3 cosɸ

𝐼12 −𝐼22 −𝐼32

Cos ɸ =
2∗𝐼2 ∗𝐼3
Power in the coil = VI3 cosɸ
Power loss in the choke coil=I3r
VI3cos ɸ = I3r
Therefore choke coil resistance = r =V/ I3 cos ɸ
Impedence of the coil= Z = V/ I3
Coil reactance = XL = Z-r
Coil Inductance = XL / 2*pi*f
