Title of Micro-Project : - Safety Management in Thermal Power Plant

1.0 Rationale (Importance of the project, in about 30 to 50 words. This is a modified

version of the earlier one written after the work)

A good health and safety management system can help minimise risk and protect against
accidents in the workplace. It is not acceptable for anyone to be hurt or fatally injured at their
place of work. Implementing a health and safety system can help to reduce accidents and boost
morale within the business.

There are strong legal, economic, psychological and moral reasons why managers should take
health and safety seriously.

Economic reasons for ensuring safe workplace: Reduces accidents, insurance, improves
employee relations, and facilitates employee commitment to quality goals.

Employees have a legal right to work in a safe and healthy environment. A safe and healthy
workplace can have a strong positive affect on the psychological deal.

Keeping people healthy and safe in their workplace generates positive PR for businesses,
especially within high-risk industries such as agriculture. Positive public relations can help to
increase productivity, profitability and business growth, whilst also creating opportunities within
new markets and supply chains. Providing evidence of a well-documented health and safety
management system may, once established, also lower your insurance premiums within the
business.

Positive attitudes and workplace culture can also help with staff motivation, absenteeism and
retention. When implemented effectively, a good system can help businesses protect against
costs associated with poor practice such as; FFI, fines, increased insurance premiums, negative
PR and remedial costs.

A good health and safety management system helps business owners meet and exceed the
minimum legal requirement, providing multiple financial benefits and the ability to fulfil moral
responsibilities. Having a management system in place supports the day to day running of your
business, and during unprecedented times of crisis such as this, a system that is tried and tested is
all the more critical.

Abstract:

The safety management system implementation in Civil Aviation of China has been lasted about
10 years, by the establishment and practice of several years, the base of safety management of
airlines has been firmed, but how to effectively evaluate the effectiveness of the safety
management system has become one of the important and difficult topics of the civil aviation
industry. The thesis includes three important parts: firstly, it will show the development stage of
safety management methods in civil aviation industry. Secondly, it will show the process of how
to implement SMS in airlines. Thirdly, it will show how to combine the risk management and
project management to implement the safety performance management. The aim to introducing
the project management firstly is to classifying and implementing the responsibility of divisions
in Airlines which is the most important point to accomplish task. It will not only effectively
evaluate the effect of SMS in this way, but also move forward the safety barrier and ensure
whom to control risk, so as to maintain a continuous safety operation of airlines.

Safety Management in Thermal Power Plant

Introduction:-

The thermal power generation 2x250 MW Korba involves the generation of electricity from
the burning of fossil fuel in a large industry furnace. In simple terms, in a coal fired station, the coal
is pulverized and blown into the furnace where it burns, much like a gas flame, to heat water and
generate steam, which moves at high speed to turbine. The turbine spins and drives a rotor attached to
a magnet in a generator. The rotating magnetic fields moving across coils in the generator produce
electric current. The thermal machines used to convert the stored energy in the fuels to the kinetic
energy of the rotor are complex units. Each consists of two principal parts: boilers and turbines. They
also include variety of auxiliary equipment to provide fuel and water to the unit and to eliminate
waste gases and products of combustion. The basic operation are highly automated. In a coal-fired
power station, where boilers and turbines are combined, there is automatic control of coal
pulverization, of supplied water fuel, of combustion, and of superheating. The elimination of ash in
the auxiliary processes is also automated. Coal consumption per day19200.00 Mt/day, water
consumption per hr required by plant
850.00 Lit/hr.It required 38.40 (Mt/day)/MW to produce current. Most construction of thermal power
plant, repair and maintenance work done during unit shutdowns or period of extensive rehabilitation.
This could involve working on one of the following components are steam drum, primary steam
piping, boiler feed water, superheater, reheater, economizer, down comers, feeder and riser tubes,
waterwalls, boiler hangher rods, mud drum, boiler casing, condensate system, electrostatic
precipitators, sulphur dioxide scrubbers, stacks. Construction and erection of all the components and
assembling is a great challenge.

What Is safety and Safety Management?

Safety is defined as the state of being free from harm or danger. Safety management can apply to
many heavily regulated industries like automotive, aviation, oil, healthcare, workplace, and food
quality.

17
Definition of Safety Management

Safety management, as defined by the National Safety Management Society, is a function that
enhances company performance by predicting operational, procedural or environmental risks and
threats before they occur. Safety management is a strategic process that identifies and addresses
safety issues for employees and the company. Aside from being a pre-emptive and preventative
process, safety management also corrects deficiencies and performance errors.

Industrial Safety Management (ISM) is all the steps taken by employers, employees, safety
officers, supervisors, and government to ensure safe work or production process in industries
which main objectives is to promote safety practice among employers and employees and to
reduce and eliminate risk in industries.

As every work environment is unique and offers different types of safety risks, dangers, hazards
and health perceptions, safety managers and professionals who are on the team in the welfare and
wellbeing of the employees and employers adopt several strategies and use management
techniques to defuse the risk perceptions to make the workplaces safe and healthy for all.

A safety management system is defined as an organization-wide process designed to manage

safety risk in the workplace. A safety management system can be created to fit any business type
and/or industry sector. Generally, effective SMS processes and procedures

Safety In Thermal Industry

Due to the potential power plant hazards that can occur, power plant safety training is a crucial part of
getting a power plant up and running. As a result, many companies and organizations have increased the
number of requirements and regulations for a power plant. However, hazards are still present.

Power plant safety training is another particularly effective and efficient way of protecting employees.
Training of employees includes educating workers on potential hazards and risks of working at a power
plant.

Many companies offer power plant training courses to limit power plant hazards. For many companies,
this means:

 protecting employees by keeping the proper emergency supplies handy,

 holding safety meetings frequently,
 following recommendations, and
 making plans for a potential emergency.

But, above all else, companies must provide their employees with the proper training and
information regarding any potential hazards.

HSI’s Power Generation course works with employees to cover general safety practices for working in
electrical power generation plants. It helps to break down what workers must fulfill in their everyday
work and provides the proper power plant training if a hazard were to occur.

Need of Safety.

In the power plant industry, working in confined spaces poses some of the most dangerous hazards of the
field. However, confined space training can help combat risks by teaching employees how to avoid or
deal with them if they occur. Power plant confined space training can help improve safety measures to
protect at-risk workers.

Safety Measures

It’s no secret that power plants can be dangerous places to work. With all of the high-voltage equipment
and flammable materials, it’s a miracle that more accidents don’t happen. But thanks to the hard work of
safety engineers, and the employees on-site, power plant accidents are relatively rare.

Even so, it’s essential for everyone who works at or visits a power plant to be aware of the safety
measures in place and what to do in case of an emergency. In this article, we will look at and review some
of the essential safety measures in place at power plants worldwide.
1
Importance of Safety

Fire safety in thermal power plants is another important focus for you. Various pieces of equipment use
flames and sparks to do their jobs. And that opens up the risk of a fire occurring in your plant, which is
why safety audits in thermal power plants tend to focus on fire safety.

There are strong legal, economic, psychological and moral reasons why managers should takehealth
and safety seriously.

Economic reasons for ensuring safe workplace: Reduces accidents, insurance, improvesemployee
relations, and facilitates employee commitment to quality goals.

Employees have a legal right to work in a safe and healthy environment. A safe and healthy
workplace can have a strong positive affect on the psychological deal.
