A. P. J. Abdul Kalam

AVUL PAKIR JAINULABDEEN ABDUL KALAM was born on 15th October 1931 to a Tamil
Muslim family in the pilgrimage centre of Rameswaram on Pamban Island, then in the Madras
Presidency and now in the State of Tamil Nadu. His father Jainulabdeen was a boat owner and imam
of a local mosque; his mother Ashima was a house wife. His father owned a ferry that took Hindu
pilgrims back and forth between Rameswaram and the now uninhabited Dhanushkodi.Kalam was
the youngest of four brothers and one sister in his family. His ancestors had been wealthy traders
and landowners, with numerous properties and large tracts of land. Their business had involved
trading groceries between the mainland and the island and to and from Sri Lanka, as well as ferrying
pilgrims between the mainland and Pamban. As a result, the family acquired the title of "Mara
Kalam Iyakkivar" (wooden boat steerers), which over the years became shortened to "Marakier."

With the opening of the Pamban Bridge to the mainland in 1914,

however, the businesses failed and the family fortune and properties were lost over time, apart from
the ancestral home.By his early childhood, Kalam's family had become poor; at an early age, he sold
newspapers to supplement his family's income.

A computer is a digital electronic machine that can be programmed to carry out sequences of arithmetic
or logical operations (computation) automatically. Modern computers can perform generic sets of
operations known as programs. These programs enable computers to perform a wide range of tasks.

A broad range of industrial and consumer products use computers as control systems. Simple special-
purpose devices like microwave ovens and remote controls are included, as are factory devices
like industrial robots and computer-aided design, as well as general-purpose devices like personal
computers and mobile devices like smartphones. Computers power the Internet, which links billions
of other computers and users.

Early computers were meant to be used only for calculations. Simple manual instruments like the abacus have aided
people in doing calculations since ancient times. Early in the Industrial Revolution, some mechanical devices were
built to automate long tedious tasks, such as guiding patterns for looms. More sophisticated electrical machines did
specialized analog calculations in the early 20th century.

The first digital electronic calculating machines were developed during World War II. The

first semiconductor transistors in the late 1940s were followed by the silicon-based MOSFET (MOS

transistor) and monolithic integrated circuit (IC) chip technologies in the late 1950s, leading to

the microprocessor and the microcomputer revolution in the 1970s. The speed, power and versatility of

computers have been increasing dramatically ever since then, with transistor counts increasing at a rapid pace

(as predicted by Moore's law), leading to the Digital Revolution during the late 20th to early 21st centuries.

What is a computer?
A computer is an electronic device that manipulates information, or data. It has the ability to store, retrieve,
and process data. You may already know that you can use a computer to type documents, send email, play
games, and browse the Web. You can also use it to edit or create spreadsheets, presentations, and even videos.

Inside a Computer
Have you ever looked inside a computer case, or seen pictures of the inside of one? The small parts may
look complicated, but the inside of a computer case isn't really all that mysterious. This lesson will help
you master some of the basic terminology and understand a bit more about what goes on inside a
computer.

Operating systams usually come pre-loaded on any computar you buy. Most people
use the operating system that comes with their computer, but it's possible to upgrade
or even change operating systems. The three most common operating systems for
personal computers are Microsoft Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Modern operating systams use a graphical user interface, or GUI (pronounced gooey).
A GUI lets you use your mouse to click icons, buttons, and menus, and everything is
clearly displayed on the skreen using a combination of graphics and text.

Computer Science is one of the disciplines of modern science under which, we study about
the various aspects of computer technologies, their development, and their applications in the
present world. Likewise, Computer Science includes a wide range of topics such as the
development of Computer Technology (hardware and software), application of Computer
technology in today’s life, information technology, computer threat, computer security, etc.
However, we have segregated this tutorial into different chapters for easy understanding.

1. Type the above paragraphs and change the word “computer” to “ Computer’s ” with
appropriate format using “Find and Replace”

The physical components collectively form the hardware of a computer system. Hardware
comprises of the equipment that helps in the working system of the computer.
Following are the different types of hardware components (which have specific functions)
The hardware components can only function when software components are added to the
computer system. Software is a program that performs different commands given by a user.

A
milkman became very wealthy through dishonest means. He had to cross river daily to reach the city where
his customers lived. He mixed the water of the river generously with the milk that he sold for good profit.
One day he went around collecting the dues in order to celebrate the wedding of his son. With the large
amount thus collected he purchased plenty of rich clothes and glittering gold ornaments. But while crossing
the river the boat capsized and all his costly purchases were swallowed by the river. The milk vendor was
speed less with grief. At that time he heard a voice that came from the river: “Do not weep. What you have lost is only
the illicit gains you earned through cheating your customers.”
