AMS 101 PROBABILITY AND STATISTICS I

Purpose of the course
To introduce student to the basic statistical concepts basic probability theory, methodology and
applications used in solving various statistical problems

Expected Learning Outcomes


By the end of the course the learner should be able to:
i) Discuss methods of data collection, data organization and presentation.
ii) Calculate measures of central tendency and spread for a given set of data
iii) Fit a given data to the trend line and use the results in forecasting
iv) Solve problems on basic theory of probability

Course Content
Definition of statistics: Nature of statistics; Sources; Methods of data collection; Classification and
processing data: Presentation of statistical data; Frequency distribution; Measures of Central tendency,
mean, mode, median and others; Measures of dispersion; Moments; Skewness; Kurtosis; Correlation and
regression Analysis; Classical and axiomatic approach to probability: Compound conditional Probability;
Concept of random variables; Stem and Leaf Presentation of data

Teaching / Learning Methodologies: Lectures; Practical work (Minitab Package); Class discussion
