2
Module Analyze signs, electrical symbols and data, and
5 Interpret technical drawings and plans

Long time ago, when letters and paper were not invented, ancient
people uses symbols in their local area to represent or describe a certain
thing or ideas which were carved in the walls of caves, stones and even in
trees. But those were hard to analyse by people from other places for they do
not have common or universal symbol in a particular thing or idea. In our
modern world, symbols were used in various applications. This includes traffic
signs and symbols, warnings, directions, and representation of a certain thing
just like what ancient people do. The only difference is we have a common or
standardized symbol in a particular thing or idea, like written words using
letter alphabet as symbols which generally everybody can read and
comprehend or understand.
In electricity, we use many symbols to represent a certain electrical
component or materials, and also warning signs for our safety. In this module,
you will be able to find out how important signs and symbols not only in this
course but also in our daily living. So, are you ready to explore the world of
signs and symbols? Let’s hop in!!!

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
At the end of this lesson, you are expected to:

L.O. 1.1 Read and interpret electrical signs, symbols and data
L.O. 1.2 Analyze electrical components and materials based on electrical
signs, symbols and data
L.O. 2.1 Read blueprints of electrical plans, diagrams and circuits
L.O. 2.2 Identify necessary tools, materials and equipment according to
blueprints of electrical plans, diagrams and circuits

3
Ooops!!! Before we jump in to our lesson proper, Let’s have a mind
conditioning first. Please follow the direction stated below…

Direction: Rearrange the scrambled letters at the left part before the number
in each question to form the right word of your answer. Write your answers in
your Electrical Installation and Maintenance activity notebook.

SLMYBO 1.It is used to represent a certain thing or ideas.

IDAE 2.It is a formulated thought or opinion. .
TADA 3. It is a factual information, used as a basis for reasoning and
calculation.
SETFAY 4.It is the condition of being protected from harm and danger.
ELTRICTECY 5.It is electrons in motion.

Electrical symbols was introduced more than 100 years ago, but was
standardized in 1947 after the 2nd world war, by which the ISO or
International Organization for Standardization was born. In these days,
more technical rules were made for the standardization of the construction of
electrical and electronic devices and components in relation of their
characteristics of operation, construction, dimensions, security, use, and to
the schematic symbol representation of equipment and systems.
Now, through this course, you will be exploring the commonly used
signs and symbols in Electricity. That will give you the idea on how to read
and interpret signs and symbols in electricity.
But wait…. let me ask first a question: Why do we need a standardized
symbol for electrical and electronic components?

4
Copy the question in your Electrical Installation and Maintenance activity
notebook and answer it briefly.

LEARNING OUTCOME 2

Interpret Technical Drawings and Plans

Objectives: At the end of this module, you will be able to:

 Read blueprints of electrical plans, diagrams and circuits.
 Identify necessary tools, materials, and equipment according to
blueprints of electrical plans, diagrams and circuits.

Electrical Plan - is a graphical presentation of electrical wiring

connections to be installed in a particular building or establishment. It
indicates the position and numbers of electrical fixtures.

Below is a sample blueprint of an electrical plan. Can you enumerate the

number of outlets, switches and incandescent lamps present in the plan? If
not please go back to TABLE 1 for reference of electrical symbols.

13
Types electrical diagram

Pictorial diagram - it is a sketch of electrical circuit that shows the

external appearance of each component. It is much like the photograph of the
actual electrical materials or components.

Simple pictorial diagram of one lamp controlled by one switch with a

battery as a source.

Schematic Diagram - is a sketch showing the components of the

circuit using standard electrical symbols. It shows the actual number of
components and how the wiring is routed but not the actual location.

14
Types of circuit

Series circuit - is a circuit which lamps are arrange in a chain manner,

so that the current has only one path to take. The current is the same through
each load. An example of this is the Christmas lights.

15
Parallel circuit - a circuit in which lamps are connected across the
wire conductor. The voltage across each load on a parallel circuit is the same.
The advantage of using parallel circuit is that even if one of the lamps is
busted, the remaining lamps will still function.
