If you were in that person’s situation, how will you deal with it:

Within six weeks, you and three of your colleagues in your department will make an important project.
After the project, you were given a ₱ 100,000 as prize.

Here is some information:

1. A has made 25% of the total project.

2. B has made 40% of the total project.

3. C has made 25% of the total project.

4. D has made 10% of the total project.

Write the amount of money that you think should be given to each:

A: ₱ 25,000

B: ₱ 40,000

C: ₱ 25,000

D: ₱ 10,000

Fairness does not imply that everyone is treated equally. To be fair, each person must receive
what they necessitate and deserve. Fairness isn’t about equality, but effort and motivation. In our daily
lives, we may not see it often, but effort, fairness, and motivation are interconnected. An energetic or
committed endeavor to do anything is referred to as making an effort. Any big accomplishment can be
viewed as an effort since it shows how we work diligently to achieve a specific objective. Even if our
endeavor fails, the fact that we gave it our best shot and exerted some power and energy suggests that
we made an effort. In line with this, we should be rewarded based on our effort. However, in reality, it
doesn’t always work like this. Thus, fairness comes in the picture. Fairness is something that should be
prioritized as much as possible. It should be treated with great importance. With fairness, there comes
the motivation. Being recognized with our effort and rewarded with fairness stimulate us to work
beyond our capacities and be the best version of ourselves. Indeed, effort, fairness, and motivation
correlate with each other which mold our well-being.

As a part of a group who worked rigorously in an important project, I divided the money given to
us based on the effort of everyone has exhibited. I determined how much each of the colleagues
contributed to the overall project and distributed the prize according to their respective contributions. I
gave ₱ 25,000 to Colleague A who made 25% of the total project. For Colleague B who made 40% of the
total project, I granted ₱ 40,000. Colleague C who made 25% of the total project is given ₱ 25,000.
Finally, Colleague D who made 10% of the total project is handed with ₱ 10,000. I believe that this
effort-based division of money is the most appropriate course of action to avoid disappointment,
comparison, and dispute.

As I reminisce my experiences, I realized that I’ve become both a leader and member. No matter
what standing I have in a group, I tend to constantly see how much effort or contribution that
every group member offers. Sometimes, I even weigh it and try to surpass what they do because
I don't want to be seen as a freeloader in our group. I am an observant individual and I firmly
believe that in everything we do, we should be rewarded based on our effort and with fairness. I
want everyone to get what they deserve; thus, assuming that I am part of a department with my
other colleagues, I came up with my decision to divide the money we got based on everyone’s
involvement in the project. I made the decision to compensate them according to the intensity
of effort they made to complete our work or project in a fixed time span. I perceive this as
fairness. Fairness is crucial. It occurs in every aspect of our lives. I established this decision
because I am adamant that fairness should be employed here wherein not everyone is treated
equally, but rewarded based on their efforts wherein no one is left out. Isn’t it upsetting when
we worked hard, but given a little amount of recognition? I came up with this decision by
considering their perspective and situation. In this way, everyone will not question or protest,
instead, they will feel encouraged, respected, trusted, and appreciated. We can’t deny that we
yearn for a peaceful society. I believe that we can achieve this through fairness because it
teaches us the significance of effort, responsibility, leadership, respect, and appreciation. I made
this decision based on effort and fairness because I’m certain that this is an incremental and
long-term basis that will substantially influence the development of habit, behavior, and intrinsic
motivation of my colleagues. Furthermore, this decision wherein effort is rewarded rather than
success provides positive implications for openness to embrace upcoming challenges or tasks,
and have a long-term motivation.
