Assignment 1: 4 Questions
QUESTION 1 [20 MARKS]
A spark-ignition engine operates on an ideal air-standard Otto cycle with compression ratio of
10. The temperature of air at the beginning of the compression process is 27°C. The
temperature of the air at the end of the isentropic expansion process is 527ºC. Consider
variable specific heat with temperature.
(a) Sketch the P-v diagram of the cycle with appropriate labels.
[5 Marks]
(c) Determine the heat addition per unit mass of the cycle in kJ/kg.
[6 Marks]
A six-cylinder, 2.4-L diesel engine operates on an ideal air-standard Diesel cycle. The intake
air is at 100 kPa and 27°C. The volume of the cylinder is 420 cm3 prior to the compression
stroke. At the end of the expansion stroke, the pressure of the air is at 300 kPa. Consider
constant specific heats at 300 K.
(a) Sketch the P-v diagram of the cycle with appropriate labels.
[5 Marks]
(c) Determine the pressure of the air at the end of the compression stroke.
[3 Marks]
Air enters the compressor of an ideal regenerative gas-turbine engine at 100 kPa and 300 K and
is compressed to 800 kPa. The regenerator has an effectiveness of 65 percent, and the air enters
the turbine at 1200 K. Consider variable specific heat values with temperature.
(a) Sketch the T-s diagram of the cycle with appropriate labels
[5 Marks]
(c) Determine the temperature of the exhaust air after the regenerator.

Air enters the compressor of an ideal regenerative gas-turbine engine at 100 kPa and 300 K and
is compressed to 800 kPa. The regenerator has an effectiveness of 65 percent, and the air enters
the turbine at 1200 K. Consider constant heat values at room temperature.
(a) Sketch the T-s diagram of the cycle with appropriate labels
[5 Marks]
(c) Determine the temperature of the exhaust air after the regenerator.
