Interesting Remainder Problems

Note:

17 ÷ 3 = 5 R 2
17 is the dividend

3 is the divisor

5 is the quotient

2 is the remainder

Examples.

1. Fill in each blank with the correct number so that the divisor is the smallest.

÷ =5R3
Solution: The divisor is the smallest when it is 1 more than the remainder.

÷ 4 = 5 R 3 → working backwards, 4 x 5 + 3 = 23

23 ÷ 4 = 5 R 3

2. Beads are strung on a string in pattern of two white beads then three black

beads as shown below.

What is the colour of the 37th bead?

What is the colour of the 49th bead?

Solution : We need only to consider a block of 5 beads since its pattern

repeats after every 5 beads.

37 ÷ 5 = 5 R 2

The colour of 37th bead is white.

49 ÷ 5 = 9 R 4

The colour of 49th bead is black.
