Re: CRTi Pinch Point

Urgent For Review Original to follow by mail Please reply

As indicated in Volant’s CRTi Maintenance Procedure (Document # 40021), a pinch point exists between the
down-hole
hole face of the keeper and the upup-hole face of the packer cup back-up,, as shown in Figure 1. This
presents a particular hazard if any air pressure exists in the cam housing and the tool is unintentionally activated
during assembly or maintenance.

Due to the requirement to access cap screws in this region to remove casing seal assemblies from the down-hole
down
end of the tool, maintenance
aintenance work should always be done with no air pressure in the tool’s air chamber. To
ensure that absolutely no pressure remains in the air chamber as per the CRTi Maintenance
aintenance Procedure
(Document # 40021) Volant recommends that Schrader valve or valve stem be removed from the tool as a visual
confirmation that the air pressure has been rreleased prior to all maintenance work. Figure 2 shows a Schrader
valve with the valve stem removed and a valve stem removal tool tool. If the maintenance environment is such that
contamination of the tool’s air chamber is a concern, Volant recommends
mmends using a vented or filtered valve cap
that is identified or colour coded to indicate air pressure has been removed.

Recommended best practices also include

includes installing or removing the cap screws with an Allen
A wrench, T-handle
wrench or socket drive hex key and ratchet, and not fingers. Best practice includes blocking the gap on the
opposite side to provide an added measure of safety
safety.

Please distribute this bulletin to operations and maintenance personnel working with Volant CRTi casing
running equipment. Please document and report any incidents of accidental release or other safety concerns
by e-mail to Volant product support at CRTSupport@volantproducts.ca
CRTSupport@volantproducts.ca. Volant is interested in any opportunity
learn about tool use and potential operational and maintenance hazards and to share best practices amongst
all CRTi users.
