Question No#1
How do the value chain and value web models help businesses identify
opportunities for strategic information system applications?
Value chain model:
The value chain model highlights specific activities in the business where competitive strategies
can best be applied and where information systems are most likely to have a strategic impact.
This model identifies specific, critical leverage points where a firm can use information
technology most effectively to enhance its competitive position. The value chain model views the
firm as a series or chain of basic activities that add a margin of value to a firm’s products or
services. These activities can be categorized as either primary activities or support activities.
Primary activities are directly related to production and distribution, whereas support activities
make the delivery of primary activities possible.

The value chain model can be used to identify opportunities for information
systems:
The value chain model forces companies to examine how they perform value-adding processes
and how they might improve those processes by asking the question of how might IS improve
customer and supplier relationships. Benchmarking is another tool that can be used; once
standards are established, a company can test the performance of its processes against those
standards to gauge their effectiveness. By doing this a firm can identify areas of improvement
that competitors might not see, or at least identify the same problems; preventing a market
disadvantage.

Value web Model:

A value web is a collection of independent firms that use information technology to coordinate
their value chains to produce a product or service for a market collectively by synchronizing the
business processes of customers, suppliers, and trading partners among different companies in
an industry or in related industries.

The value web helps businesses identify opportunities for strategic information
systems:
By working with other firms, industry participants can use information technology to develop
industry-wide standards for exchanging information or business transactions electronically,
which force all market participants to subscribe to similar standards. Looking at the industry
value chain encourages you to think about how to use information systems to link up more
efficiently with your suppliers, strategic partners, and customers. Strategic advantage derives
from the ability of a firm to relate their value chain to the value chains of their partners.
Question No#2
What is the role of the information systems function in a business?
The information systems department is the formal organizational unit responsible for
information technology services. The information systems department is responsible for
maintaining the hardware, software, data storage, and networks that comprise the firm’s IT
infrastructure. Compare the roles played by programmers, systems analysts, information systems
managers, the chief information officer (CIO), chief security officer (CSO), and chief knowledge
officer (CKO).
 Programmers are highly trained technical specialists who write the software instructions
for computers.
 Systems analysts constitute the principal liaisons between the information systems groups
and the rest of the organization. The systems analyst’s job is to translate business
problems and requirements into information requirements and systems.
 Information systems managers lead teams of programmers and analysts, project
managers, physical facility managers, telecommunications mangers, or database
specialists.
 Chief information officer is a senior manager who oversees the use of information
technology in the firm.
 Chief security officer is responsible for information systems security in the firm and has
the principle responsibility for enforcing the firm’s information security policy. The CSO
is responsible for educating and training users and IS specialists about security, keeping
management aware of security threats and breakdowns, and maintaining the tools and
policies chosen to implement security.
 Chief knowledge officer helps design programs and systems to find new sources of
knowledge or to make better use of existing knowledge in organizational and
management processes.

Question No#3
How does porter's competitive forces model help companies develop
competitive strategies using information systems?
PORTER'S COMPETITIVE FORCES MODEL:

Porter's Competitive Forces Model provides general view of the firm, its competitors and the
environment. This helps companies develop competitive strategies with the use of information
systems. Porter's Competitive Forces Model makes you look at your firm's business and the five
competitive factors that mold your firm. Take for instance E-bay, which at one point was a
leader in online retail. Using Porter's Competitive Forces Model E-bay realized that they would
have to fix up their strategy because they were losing market share to other online retailers, like
their competitor Amazon. They knew that information systems plays a big role in the
development of E-bay's organization to make it expand. So E-bay began working with other
businesses to grow and diversify their business. Information Systems is key to keeping your
organization competitive is a fast moving and constantly changing marketplace.
