around houses.

3. windbreaker (pangontra sa hangin nga kusog)

Closely spaced ornamental shrubs and trees are usually planted
close to buildings to act as windbreaker and it adds beauty of the
area.

3
4. screening and delineation (paghulagway sa) of areas
Ornamental plants can be used to screen a place such as a house
from the prying eyes of strangers.

5. hedge ( magsilbing koral o alad) plants

DAY 3

Topic: BASIC SKILLS IN PLANTING ORNAMENTAL PLANTS

Objective:
Demonstrate the correct way of planting ornamental plants by:
• identifying things to consider in choosing or selecting plants
to grow.

Discussion:

Things we need to consider in choosing or selecting plants to

grow:

1. Function refers to the purpose that the plant serves in the

landscape.
What is your purpose of planting?
As discussed previously, you can use it as a hedge, a shade ,
windbreaker, a landscape decoration and others.
So, choose a plant according to your purpose of planting.

Bougainvilla as hedge and Ornamental shrub as shade

decoration

2. Site adaptability is the relationship between the needs of the

plant and the environment where you want the plants to be
placed.

• Indoor (Inside the

house)

11
• Outdoor (Outside the
house)

• The gardener must determine the amount of sunlight exposure

in the planting area for plants vary in its need of sunlight.

3. Aesthetics starts with the plant type and the size of the
designated planting area. All plants will take up space than others.
The size of the available space influences the type of plant we
select.

Small space Big space

The formation of planting area could be:

Narrow Vertical

12
4. Management
This is the level of maintenance that we are willing to administer
and adjust for our plant. So, we must select or choose a plant
according to our capability to care for it. Plant needs your time,
effort /energy and money.

Example:

• Your time - If you are a busy person,

choose a plant that needs little care or
maintenance.

• Your effort and energy- Do you like

watering, planting and replanting? Is
your health allowing you to be busy
caring for plants? If yes, then there is
nothing to worry about maintenance

in choosing a plant.

• Money – do you have enough money to

buy the plant you choose, its fertilizer,
pots and others?

5. health of the plant in choosing a plant seedling/stock

• we should look for plants that are sturdy, clean, shapely, well-
potted, and that have dense, healthy foliage or leaves.
• we should avoid plants which have yellow or chlorotic leaves,
burned leaf margins, water soaked or wilted foliage, spots or
blotches and rank, spindly growth

DAY 4

Topic: BASIC SKILLS IN PLANTING ORNAMENTAL PLANTS

Objective: Demonstrate the correct way of planting

ornamental plants by:
• discussing how to prepare plant seedlings, planting
area and proper method of planting.

Discussion:

A. Preparing planting area and soil will depend upon the

plant you have chosen.

1. For indoor and outdoor which are foliage and flowering

plants, it needs loam soil that are humous (humok ug tambok)

2. For cacti and succulents – it needs a combination of humous,

sandy and pebbles for better water draining.

Pot or plot preparation will depend upon the size of the plant
and the number of pieces you desire to place in your pot or
your plot.

16
B. Plot or planting area preparation:
• Plan your design – size, shape etc.
• Remove weeds, gravel or big stones that are not needed in
your design
• Cultivate the soil
• Add or put fertile soil suited to the plant you have chosen

17
C. Proper Method of Planting Ornamental Plants
1. Land clearing
This is an act of preparing the land
for farming or cultivation of ornament
plant. This can be done by clearing
the site with tools like hoe, cutlass,
axe, rake, spade, shovel etc.

2. Seedbed preparation
Seedbed preparation can be done
using a hoe, followed by making
the surface flat, smooth and ready
for sowing the seeds.

3. Planting
Before planting we should prepare
or till the soil using a variety of
methods. Some turn over the soil
with a spade, while others loosen
it with garden fork. Then, they
rake it smooth before planting.

4. Weeding
This is an act of removing
unwanted plant growing where
they are not wanted or planted.

5. Fertilizer application
Not all soils have enough nutrients
or the right balance of nutrients.
For these reasons,we have to
enhance soil fertility by adding
fertilizer,a material that contains
one or more of the nutrients plant
needs.

18
6. Watering
Water is very useful for plants as it is
for other organisms. The best method
for watering plants is to apply the
water directly to the soil, rather than
over the tops of the plants.

7. Mulching
Mulching is an act of using some
materials on the soil to conserve
the water and at the same time to
control weed growth. Mulch acts
as a barrier that slows down
evaporation by reducing the amount
of air and heat that reaches the soil
surface.

8. Pruning
It is an act of trimming the vegetative
plant parts (leaves and stem) to have
good shape.

Let us recall what we have discussed.

How do we prepare the planting area

and the soil?

How do we make a plot for our

ornamental plants?

What should we do in the planting

preparation?

What is the proper method of planting

ornamental plants?
