CHAPTER 1

The Problem and Its Background

(Should start on the upper half of the paper in CAPITAL, bold letters)

This chapter includes the background of the study, Statement of the

Problem, Conceptual Framework, Significance of the Study, Scope and Limitations
of the study, and definition of terms.

Background of the Study

First Paragraph: Write a catchy introduction to the topic of research. A quotation or a

situational statement may be used to present the idea of what the research is.

Second Paragraph: Write the reason that made the researchers choose the topic. Start
with the broad point of the issue. Then, point out the first problem.

Third Paragraph: Write the second problem related to the topic of your research that
may have existed that may be in one way or another.

Fifth Paragraph: Sum up the ideas into one statement. Make it appear that the current
research is essentially important as based on the ideas elaborated in the previous
paragraphs.

Statement of the Problem

Write in this portion the problems you need to answer in your research, such as
the profile of the respondents and the matters you need to solve or find a solution.

The Statement of the problem becomes your guide on what you want to discover
in your study. For example, if you intend to find all the challenges that the grade 10
students face in doing their modules, your statement of the problem might be written like

in the new normal toward independent research writing.
this, “What are the challenges that students face in the modular modality in terms of
answering their modules?”.

This study aims to (title of your research)___________________________.

Specifically, this study will answer the following questions:

1. What is the profile of the respondents?

2. __________________________________

3. __________________________________

Conceptual Framework

This is the visual presentation of how the researchers view the whole research. Using a
graphic organizer, show the flow of the research. This diagram is called the Input Process
Output

Write inside the first box the input of the researchers such as the variables. Then on the
second box, write the processes that the research conducted to respond to the problem
statement. The last box contains the result that the researchers are expecting after the
process was done.

Input Process Output

Scope and Limitation

This is the part where the researcher writes the scope and the limitations of research in
terms of the researcher’s capacity and the research’s target and boundary.

First Paragraph: Start the paragraph with the line “The scope of this study is” then
proceed on what is the general scope of the study. This is just the repetition of the general
statement of the problem followed by the specific objectives of the research.

Second Paragraph: This is the part that states the things that the research cannot do
because it is not the focus of the research. This may also state what are the related topics
but were not included because of the researcher’s limitations. The reasons for not
including these things will have to be explained. One reason that could be given is time
constraint, unavailability of technology, difficulty of collecting data (if the population is
large), and financial constraints.

Significance of the Study

This states the people, organizations, stakeholders that will benefit from the research
findings. The beneficiaries must be arranged starting from the most benefited party to the

letters followed by a period then state how the individual will benefit from the study.

Students. This study will help the students understand the importance of

organizing timetables for each goal in order to successfully achieve it accordingly.

Definition of Terms

Collect all the terms that were essential in the research. Arrange them in alphabetical
order and indent each word being defined. Define words as how they are used in the
research. The term should be in bold letters followed by a period then the operational
definition. Follow this sample below:

that they encounter.
