PROCEDURE

1. Assess: To ensure safe and appropriate care during the procedure, addressing potential

2. Determine: Some agencies require an order.


a. Whether a primary care provider’s order is needed before a shampoo can be given.

3. Assemble equipment: All equipment required for the health assessment should be clean, in good working
order, and readily accessible.

4. Introduce yourself, and verify the client’s identity. Explain to the client what you are going to do, why it is necessary, if appropriate, and how the client To alleviate any tension or anxiety that the client is experiencing. At the end of the

a. Put the plastic sheet or pad on the bed under the head. The plastic keeps the bedding /

b. Remove the pillow from under the client’s head, and place it under the shoulders, unless there is some underlying condition.

This keeps the shoulder dry.

d. Place the shampoo basin under the head, putting a folded washcloth or pad where the client’s neck rests on the edge of the basin.
If the client is on a stretcher, the neck can rest on the edge of the sink. Podding supports the muscles of the neck and prevents undue strain and discomfort.

e. Fanfold the top bedding down to the waist and cover the upper part of the client with the bath blanket.

The folded bedding will stay dry and the bath blanket.

f. Place the receiving receptacle on a table or chair at the bedside. Put the spout of the shampoo basin over the receptacle. Protect the Client's eyes by placing a damp washcloth over their eyes.

11. Protect the client’s eyes. To prevent irritation or discomfort caused by shampoo runoff and chemicals.

12. Place a damp washcloth over the client’s eyes. This prevents shampoo from getting into the clients eyes.

13 Shampoo the hair To cleanse and prepare the hair for shampooing.
a. Wet the hair thoroughly with the water.
b. Apply shampoo to the scalp. Make a good lather with the shampoo while massaging the scalp with the pads of your fingertips. To ensure the area of the head is clean thoroughly.
c. Rinse the hair briefly and apply shampoo again. To remove remaining dirt if necessary.
d. Make a good lather and massage the scalp as before. Vigorous rubbing stimulates the scalp and also helps the patient relax.
e. Rinse the hair thoroughly this time to remove all the shampoo. Retained shampoo leaves a dull finish on hair. Soap may cause scalp irritation.
f. Squeeze as much water as possible out of the hair with your hands. To dry the hair faster.

14. Dry the hair thoroughly To prevent moisture-related issues such as scalp irritation.
a. Rub the client’s hair with a heavy towel.
b. Dry the hair with the dryer. Set the temperature at “warm”. To prevent the client from becoming chilled.
c. Continually move the dryer to prevent burning the client’s scalp. To increase circulation of the scalp and promote a sense of well-being.

15. Ensure the client comfort To promote relaxation and minimize anxiety.
a. Assist the person confined to bed to a comfortable position.
b. Arrange the hair using a clean brush and comb. To prevent tangles.
c. Document the shampoo and any assessments. To provide coordination and continuity of care.
