Pronunciation

In Bahasa Melayu, there are 6


Vowel phonemes, namely a, e, e
(pepet), i, o and u.
• a is pronounced aa or ar as in tar, bar, and
therefore:
saya (I) = sa-yaa
mata (eyes) = ma-taa
kaya (rich) = ka-yaa

• e is pronounced ere or are as in mare or hare


or pare, and therefore:
meja (table) = mare-jaa
sewa (rent) = sare-waa
• e (pepet) is pronounced err, and the sound is
very short indeed, therefore:
kera (monkey) = kraa
peta (map) = ptaa

• i is pronounced ee as in feed, deed, but the


sound is not long and therefore:
pipi (cheek) = pee-pee
biji (seed) = bee-jee
kiri (left) = kee-ree
• o is pronounced or or aw as in law, raw and
therefore:
bola (ball) = baw-laa
roti (bread) = raw-tee
topi (hat) = taw-pee

• u is pronounced oo as in boot, soot and


therefore:
susu (milk) = soo-soo
buku (book) = boo-koo
The consonants

In general, the pronunciation of


consonants in Bahasa Melayu is the
same as in English, but the following
should be given special attention.
• c is pronounced ch as in chair, chin, much, etc. Examples:
cari (find)
cepat (fast)

• g is always hard such as in garden, gun, globe, etc. not as in


ginger. Examples:
gambar (picture)
gelanggang (court)

• The final k is soft and hardly audible. It is not exploded as in


English. Examples:
budak (child)
perak (silver)
tarik (pull)
• If r falls in the final syllable, it is hardly audible.
Examples:
lapar (hungry)
pasir (sand)
telur (egg)

• The final h is soft but unlike the English h, this


must be distinctly pronounced. Examples:
leba/h (bee)
ruma/h (house)
mera/h (red)
tana/h (land)
