Padang city Landmark

1. Masjid Raya Padang

The Grand Mosque of West Sumatra or also known as the Mahligai Minang
Mosque is one of the largest mosques in Indonesia, located in North Padang
District, Padang City, West Sumatra Province. This mosque, whose construction
is still under construction, is the largest mosque in West Sumatra.

Construction of this mosque began with the laying of the first stone on
December 21 2007 by the Governor of West Sumatra at that time, Gamawan
Fauzi. The work was carried out in several stages which were hampered by
relying only on West Sumatra APBD funds.

The first stone was laid to mark the start of construction of this mosque on
December 21 2007 by Governor Gamawan Fauzi. According to the plan, this
mosque will have three floors which are estimated to be able to accommodate
around 20,000 worshipers, namely around 15,000 worshipers on the ground
floor and the rest on the second and third floors. This mosque was built on an
area of around 40,000 square meters with the main building area being less than
half the land area, namely around 18,000 square meters, leaving a large
courtyard. In this yard, a courtyard, parking area, garden and evacuation area
will be created in the event of a tsunami (shelter).

The mosque construction consists of three floors. The main room which is used
as a prayer room is located on the top floor, has a terrace that slopes down to the
street. The plan of the mosque is square, tapering in four corners, reminiscent of
the shape of the cloth spread when the four tribes of the Quraish tribe in Mecca
shared the honor of moving the Black Stone. The sharp angle shape also
represents the tapered roof of the Minangkabau traditional house Rumah
Gadang.

2. Istano Basa Pagaruyung

Istano Basa Pagaruyung, better known as the Great Palace of the Pagaruyung
Kingdom, is a museum in the form of a replica of the Pagaruyung Kingdom
palace located in Nagari Pagaruyung, Tanjung Emas District, Tanah Datar
Regency, West Sumatra. This palace is approximately 5 kilometers from
Batusangkar.

In the past, this palace was the residence and center of government for the
Minangkabau kings from the Pagaruyung Kingdom. The journey of this
kingdom was quite long and went through two religious phases, namely
Buddhism and Islam. The Pagaruyung Kingdom is believed to have been
founded in 1347 with its first king named Adityawarman. However, these two
things are still a matter of debate among researchers. Pagaruyung Palace, which
can be visited in Tahan Datar Regency today, is a replica of the original palace
which was destroyed by fire in 1976.
Pagaruyung Palace is a building in the form of a Rumah Gadang. The base in
the name of this palace means big, namely the circumference of the Pagaruyung
palace. The existing Basa Pagaruyung Palace has three floors, consisting of 72
pillars and 11 roof gonjongs. The building has special characteristics that are
different from other gadang houses.

This characteristic can be seen from the physical form of the building which is
equipped with carvings of Minangkabau natural philosophy and culture. The
palace building has platforms or floor rises on the right and left sides.

The presence of a pavilion in this room shows the identity of the Pagaruyung
Palace as Rumah Gadang Koto Piliang, which adheres to an aristocratic system
of government, namely different people's sitting positions based on their status.

The second floor of Pagaruyung Palace is the king's bedroom. Meanwhile, the
third floor is intended as a place for meditation and as a location to monitor war
times.
