OVERVIEW OF

OPERATING SYSTEM
Shamier-Rahman K. Tahil
Definition of
Operating System
• An operating system (OS) serves as a crucial
software component that establishes a
communication bridge between the computer
hardware and the user. It provides a robust
platform for various software applications to
operate and effectively manages the hardware
resources of the computer.
Functions of Operating System

Process Management

• Handles the execution and scheduling of processes, essentially overseeing

programs in their active state.
• Manages the creation, termination, and synchronization of processes to
ensure efficient utilization of computing resources.

Memory Management

• Takes charge of organizing and controlling computer memory.

• Allocates and deallocates memory space for different programs based on
their requirements.
• Utilizes virtual memory techniques to extend available RAM, enhancing the
overall efficiency of the system.
Functions of Operating System

File System Management

• Manages files stored on storage devices, presenting a hierarchical

structure for organized data storage.
• Controls crucial file operations such as creation, deletion, modification,
and access control, ensuring data integrity.

Device Management

• Manages communication between the computer and its peripherals

(devices).
• Controls device access and oversees input/output operations, fostering
seamless interaction between the system and connected devices.
TYPES OF OPERATING
SYSTEM
1. Single User, Mult-User and Real-Time Systems
2. Embedded Systems
3. Network Operating Systems
Single User, Multi-User and Real-Time
Systems
Single-user systems
• are tailored for individual use, commonly found in personal
computers.

Multi-user systems
• support multiple users concurrently, making them ideal for server
environments.

Real-time systems
• respond instantly to events, critical for applications with time-sensitive
requirements.
Embedded Systems

Specialized operating systems embedded in devices like

IoT devices, smartphones, and appliances.

Optimized for specific functionalities within the device,

contributing to efficient and targeted performance.
Network Operating Systems

Facilitates seamless communication and resource sharing among

computers connected in a network.

Enables file and printer sharing, user authentication, and centralized

administration, enhancing collaboration and efficiency in a
networked environment.
