“Installation of Solar-Powered Emergency Lighting and Outlet at Home”

OBJECTIVES
 Assess the solar potential of residential locations to determine the feasibility of harnessing sufficient
sunlight for emergency lighting and outlet needs.
 Investigate the technical specifications of solar-powered systems, including panel efficiency, battery
capacity, and inverter performance, to ensure optimal functionality in a home environment.
 Analyze the overall cost-effectiveness of installing solar-powered emergency lighting and outlets at
home, considering initial setup costs, maintenance expenses, and potential long-term savings.

GAP
As society grapples with the increasing frequency of power outages, natural disasters, and unforeseen
emergencies, ensuring a reliable and sustainable source of power within the confines of one's home has become
an imperative. The installation of solar-powered emergency lighting and outlets at home presents a promising
solution. Most of emergency power supply are from generator, and generator are costly. And not all owned a
generator.

REFERENCE LITERATURE
 Portable Photovoltaic Power plant with Solar Tracker for Disaster Affected Area Emergency
Power Supply. This paper will discuss about the design of a portable photo voltaic electric
generator capable of tracking sunlight in all directions. Such power generator is designed for
disaster affected area with power outage, such as during major floods like Jakarta in 2012, or
strong earthquake such as Yogyakarta in 2006 and Japan in 2011 (Tohoku) and 2016
(Kumamoto). Such occurrence usually results in disruptions of public service, especially power
grids. The system consists of a 10 Wp PV solar panels capable in two axes movement, which is
120° horizontal and 360° azimuth movement with ATMega8535 micro controller as the main
controller. Two-axis movement is based on two types of sensors, 360° directional movement is
based on the HMC5883 compass sensor. This compass sensor panel also be configured to always
directs towards the sun so that if the direction of the base plate was changed, it will automatically
direct the panel to the direction of the sun. While 120° vertical movement based on three pieces
of LDR (Light Dependent Resistor) as sun sensors. The purpose of this system is to maximize
the amount of light received by the panel so the panel power output is also maximized so it can
generate emergency electrical supply for lighting and other basic needs. Riyantoa, I., Octavianoa,
A., Suparmokoa, Obara K. (2016).

 Smart Solar Portable Power Supply System for Emergency Medical Equipment. During
emergencies or natural disasters, sustainable electricity generation is critical for human survival
or saving lives. Hence the best alternative solution for such a situation is a Smart Solar Portable
Power Supply System with a battery-based solar system and Thevenin circuit for load study and
power theft control. It consists of solar PV arrays with an MPPT controller and boost converter
to maximize output power at variable irradiance. The boost converter's output is connected to a
metal hydride battery and six circuit breakers for switching according to the load requirement. A
Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation based inverter is connected to the battery system, which
in turn is connected to the load. A Thevenin test circuit is connected across the load for analyzing
its requirement to display the battery's duration for the connected load. Graphical user interface
(GUI) based micro-controller is used to control switching of circuits from test circuit to the main
circuit based on the proprietor's choice. The duration display and unanimous control of the
system via GUI make the system reliable and theft-proof. A quantitative survey was conducted
among thirty-three medical practicians and paramedics regarding the usefulness of this system on
how it could save lives. Sreekumar, G., Chekkichalil, V., Oshmitha, A., Nair, A., Rajasree S. R.
