THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Background of the Study

Teenage rebellion is a complex and often misunderstood phenomenon. It is a time

when young people are trying to establish their independence and identity, and this can
lead to conflicts with parents and authority figures. The teenage years are the stage of life
that sits between being a child and an adult and are sometimes referred to as the
"transitional phase."

Adolescence is a period of intense physical, psychological, and emotional change.

During their teen years, children experience angst, highs and lows and are very
vulnerable to peer, parental and academic pressure. Therefore, it’s a challenge for
adolescents to deal with emotions equably and think rationally. The adolescent brain was
long portrayed as broken, immature, or contributing to problematic behaviours (Abrams,
2022).

The changes have a big influence on the teen and might cause confusion in both
the youngster and parent. Teenagers or adolescents are now in the stage of life where they
need so much care, understanding and affection as they undergo puberty. Experts also see
the positive side of rebellion, but we cannot hide the fact that most teenage rebellions are
destructive not only to themselves but also to others.

The reasons behind teenage rebellion are many. Teens are anxious to be accepted
within their peer group, prompting them to be ‘cool’ and dress inappropriately, and
experiment with drugs and/or alcohol. Many teens rebel because they want attention and
are trying to establish their personal identities and find life’s purpose. It’s normative for
them to assert their independence and resist parental advice and control.

According to US-based psychologist Carl E Pickhardt there are two common

types of teen rebellion – “rebellion of non-conformity and rebellion of non-compliance.”
2

In both types, he says, rebellion attracts adult attention by offending it. Young people
rebel against
3

their self-interest, engage in self-defeating and self-destructive activities, experiment with

high-risk behavior, and injure valued relationships especially with parents and elders.

It's hardly surprising that many teenagers can talk back to their parents. They also
now use it as an excuse to neglect their responsibilities to their families, and schools
because their parents do not have the time to listen to their children's issues. Nowadays,
teens do not have a close relationship with their parents. Teenagers rebel because they
wanted their parents' attention. Parents fail to observe their children's attitudes and
personal issues. Moreover, teenagers are going through terrible catastrophes with their
families at an early age, such as separated parents, the influence of bad friends, the
uncomfortable atmosphere, and other potential problems.

According to Kaur (2013), teenage rebellion results from their own observations,
troubles, and pubertal frustrations. The rebellion of teenagers has major reasons. The
study of Gregoire (2014) shows the following reasons why youth rebelled; (1) Youth
wants to seek independence from fighting against adults like their parents, teachers, and
other people who control them. (2) They seek individualism since many young people are
desperate to change themselves to see them acceptable.

Although many studies have examined the factors of teenage rebellion, there is a
lack of research on how teenagers' rebel in cases of family situations, for instance, being
a middle child in the family that lacks attention and support from their parents. This
research gap limits our understanding of what are the leading causes of teenage rebellion
and its outcome to the individual who are engaged in such problem. Therefore, this study
aims to explore the several factors that can lead an adolescent to be rebellious.
4

Statement of the Problem

This study was conducted to investigate all factors affecting teenage rebellion of
the students at Tanauan School of Craftsmanship and Home Industries during the School
Year 2023-2024.

Specifically, this study aims to answer the following questions:

1. How do the respondents’ demographic profile may be described in terms

of:
1.1 Gender
1.2 Age
1.3 Section
2. What is the respondents' level of agreement to the factors of teenage
rebellion
3. What recommendations may be drawn based on the findings of the study?

Significance of the Study

The findings of this study will be a greater help in society considering that
teenagers are the ones who should be taught to give respect and should be moral.
Furthermore, this study will be a significant endeavour in promoting teenage rebellion is
not just a minor issue that is presenting our modern society. This study will also be
beneficial to the following:

Teenagers. This study will help teenagers to know more about what the causes of
their rebellion are and what will be the effect of it on their lives.

Parents. This study will help the parents who were having a problem with their
teens. This can help them to get an idea on why their teens rebel and how they can avoid
such things.

Teachers. Through this study, teachers will be able to identify the leading factors
of teenage rebellion to their students and will be able to help the students through the
result of this study.

School. This study will help the school administrators to be able to know the
problems encountered by the students that make them rebel and will be able to make
improvements for the betterment of the school and its scope.

Researchers. The researchers will be able to assess the leading factors of teenage
rebellion of the students.
6

Future Researchers. The future researchers can get information and ideas that
will serve as reference in their future studies. They can get additional information in this
study that can help them in their studies in relation to teenage rebellion.

Scope and Delimitation

This study focuses on the primary reason of why teenagers rebel and it will also
evaluate the factors of teenage rebellion. The participants of this study will specifically be
the teenagers between the age 16-19 who are currently studying at Tanauan School of
Craftsmanship and Home Industries Tanauan, Leyte. The researchers would find it
simpler to perform the study at Tanauan, Leyte, since the researchers are from this school.
The researchers will be conducting an evaluation survey to identify what are the factors
of teenage rebellion.

Moreover, this study also covers the parent-teenager relationship to furthermore

elaborate the factors of teenage rebellion. The study will mainly discuss about teenage
rebellion and will no longer fully discuss other teenage issues such as drugs and alcohol,
bullying, cyber addiction, and other issues.

Definitions of Terms

To better understand this study, key terms are hereby defined operationally.

Adolescent refers to the transitional phase of growth and development between

childhood and adulthood, marked by physical, cognitive, emotional, and social changes.
7

Angst is a feeling of deep anxiety or dread, typically an unfocused one about the human
condition or the state of the world in general.

Complex consisting of many different and connected parts.

Phenomenon a fact or situation that is observed to exist or happen, especially one whose
cause or explanation is in question.

Puberty is the period during which adolescents reach sexual maturity and become
capable of reproduction.

Rebellion is an act of violence or open resistance to an established government or ruler.

Teenager refers to a person aged between 13 and 19 years.

Teenage Rebellion is a part of social development in adolescents for them to develop an

identity independent from their parents or family and a capacity for independent decision-
making. They may experiment with distinct roles, behaviours, and ideologies as part of
this process of developing an identity.

Transitional Phase is one in which things are changing from one state to another.

Related Literature and Studies

Related Literature

According to Gongala (2023), when your child reaches adolescence, you may see
many behavioral changes in them, including teen rebellion. Your children may be
answering you back, rarely assist you with household chores, and are determined to break
every rule. Most parents deal with it in some way or another, with some cases being
minor and others being serious. The rebellion of a youth will not be lost in its stage of
adolescence, but not all youths are equally rebellious.

In a similar way, out of 12 factors in our study, only seeking enough attention
from parents was the leading factor. The teen years are the stage where teenagers need a
lot of guidance; they may face difficulties and challenges throughout their way into
adulthood. And parents could be the ones who will support and understand them.
Teenagers are not totally rebellious; they just lack attention from their parents, which
leads them to be defiant.

The youth would like to seek independence to find factors that might be visible
for their own identities. The study of Gregoire (2014) shows the following reasons why
youth rebelled; (1) Youth wants to seek independence from fighting against adults like
9

their parents, teachers, and other people who control them. (2) They seek individualism
since many young people are desperate to change themselves to see them acceptable.

Moreover, our study shows that our participants are influenced by their friends,
which results in them forcing themselves to change in order to be accepted. The social
environment of teenagers has a huge impact on molding their character. They tend to
imitate what is being accepted, which results in their seeking independence.

According to Kaur (2013), teenage rebellion is due to their findings of their own,
turmoil, and pubertal frustrations. A rebel young man can be harmed by the whole family
so the youths are seeking independence. Teenagers want to stay with their friends than
their families. They want to have the power to make decisions for them. This leads them
to become disobedient to their parents' wishes and respond. Perhaps many young people
in the present age are interested in associating with their friends rather than their families
because it is easier for them to say problems with their friends and most of their friends
are experiencing the same problem that they encounter.

There are two groups of rebellion according to Shepherd's Hill Academy (2023),
the first group is rebellion against society. This type of rebellion is also known as non-
conformity. During this type of rebellion, a teen works hard to stand out or be different
than society. A teen may choose to act or appear a certain way in a protest to societal
norms. This type of rebellion could take place in an academic setting, where a teen
decides to rebel against the institution of education. They may refuse to study or take part
in class activities. The rebellion could also take place within society, encompassing
various areas of the teen’s life.

The second type of rebellion is against adult authority. This rebellion is also called
non-compliance. Noncompliance may start out small with toeing the line of disobedience,
but it could also grow to blatant and outright disregard for rules or laws. Both types of
rebellion attract attention. As teens seek to realize and identify who they are going to be,
this type of attention can seem desirable.

Furthermore, parents have a significant role in the reasons behind their children's
rebellion. Parents grow furious, yelling at their teenagers and demanding things when
10

they don't live up to their expectations. Teens find it unacceptable to get this care, thus
they adopt a disobedient attitude. They seek the advice of their close friends, who will
support their choice. In the study of Lanjekar et al., (2022), good parenting is a process
whereby a parent meets a child's needs according to the cultural standard that changes
from generation to generation. Parenting offers support and care to the child in painful or
stressful situations and gives confidence when the child is in non-distressing or non-
stressful conditions. Sensitive parenting with young children provides an emotional
climate for them.

Due to modern technology allowing young people to express their desires through
social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter, today's youth differ from previous
generations. However, a lot of today's youth do not believe that the things they post on
these platforms have a negative impact on their lives. Teens might develop negative
behaviors, a lack of respect for authority figures, and disrespect for their parents. Teenage
rebellion may be on the rise these days due to factors including increased exposure to
violent content, friendship or strangling, and the expansion of family problems like
addiction, divorce, and second families. As they experienced maturity early on, today's
youth start rebelling at an early age.

It's not easy to become a teenager. Like older people, there are also problems and
perceptions that young people should face. They also have a lot of perceptions and
problems about things to deal with in the reality of life (Ronquillio, 2013).

In most cases, parents are afraid of teen rebellion because they fail to understand
the reasons for it and/or feel they cannot handle it well. Teens do not rebel for no reason.
Often, they feel that they are just standing up for their own beliefs and ideas. Even when
they rebel to be more independent, make impulsive decisions or belong to a peer group, a
teen’s rebellion also shows that they have the self-confidence to express themselves,
which will be an important skill throughout their life (Ambre, 2022).

Related Studies
11

Rebellion refers to a form of organized resistance or uprising against a

government or authority, often characterized by the use of force or violence. It is what
distinguishes the adolescent years, and it is one that leads to many disagreements with
parents. Rebellion is a common theme during this period, as adolescents seek to establish
independence and autonomy from their parents and other authority figures. The two most
common types of defiance are rebellion against adult authority (rebellion of non-
compliance) and rebellion against social conformity (rebellion of non-conformity). In
both cases, defiance draws the attention of adults by upsetting them. Many studies have
established the link between media exposure and violence, aggressive ideas, actions, and
desensitization. (Kumar, 2023)

In the study conducted by Sasota et al., (2013) they focused on parent-children

relationship. The researchers goal was to help the parents by conducting a study which
the objective is to know the age of the teenagers and also the cause and effect of
rebellion. The researcher confirmed that most of the teenagers tend to rebel due to
influence of friends, engage in drugs and family problems.

However, in our study, it shows that the majority of the participants were having a
problem with their relationship with their parents, resulting in their acting deviant.
Parental guidance has indeed played a crucial role for parents. Their children can be the
absorber of their actions towards them.

In the study conducted of Ganiron et al, 2017. They aimed to identify and analyze
the factors that motivate students to rebel and find solutions to the student's problem. The
research findings shows that family problems was the leading factor of teenage rebellion.

On the contrary, our study shows that teenage rebellion is cause by the lack of
relationship with parents, so adolescent rebellion is not simply a matter of parental
aggravation; it is also a matter of concern. Although the teenager thinks rebellion is an act
of independence, it actually never is. It is really an act of dependency. Rebellion causes
the young person to depend on self-definition and personal conduct to do the opposite of
what other people want. That's why the antidote to rebellion is the true independence
offered by creating and accepting a challenge.
12

To instill positive and optimistic characteristics on their adolescent children,

parents should set an example. Children who grew up in a harmonious and secure

environment are less prone to anxiety and sadness. Teenagers learn how to get along

with people from their loving parents and sociable brothers and sisters. They have a
greater faith in other people, which mean they will automatically seek assistance from
family, instructors, and friends when faced with difficulties and failures. (Zhang & Li,
2022)

Research Locale

The study was conducted at Tanauan School of Craftsmanship and Home

Industries Campus II, Sto. Niño Tanauan, Leyte. The researchers conducted the study in
the said location since this is where the researchers and the respondents are currently
studying.

Sampling Technique

Stratified Random Sampling Technique will be used for selecting the respondents
of the study. The procedure will be employed to ensure a fair and equal presentation of
students of the Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) strand to get the general
responses of the students.
14

Validation of Instrument

Before utilizing the survey questionnaire in a form of Likert Scale, the

distribution of survey questionnaires to the respondents which are the selected grade 12
Senior High Humanities and Social Sciences students of Tanauan School of
Craftsmanship and Home, Industries, Campus II, Tanauan, Leyte, the research
instruments were presented to the research advisors for initial checking. The purpose of
this is to ensure that the letters and questionnaires used were devoid of grammatical
errors and misleading questions. This was also the guarantee, the collection of accurate
data regarding the factors that lead to students' rebellion. It was crucial to eliminate any
potential sources of bias or confusion that could affect the validity and reliability of the
survey results.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researcher personally administered the data gathering through the structured
survey questionnaire develop for this study to the 168 teenagers/students who are
currently studying at Tanauan School of Craftsmanship and Home Industries Campus II,
Sto Niño Tanauan, Leyte, which is the locale of the study. A retrieval accomplished
questionnaires was attained with the cooperation of the research adviser. The data were
analyzed using descriptive method of research, and in this study, the researchers went
through several steps to obtain the necessary data needed for this study.

1. A letter of request to conduct the study was prepared.

2. In conducting and distributing the survey questionnaires, the researchers
explained thoroughly to the respondents the purpose of the study.
3. The researchers distributed the survey questionnaires to the respondents, also the
respondents were given a certain amount of time to answer the study.
15

4. The researchers tallied, evaluated, analyzed, and interpreted the data gathered.
5. All the efforts made are kept confidential and anonymous for the security and
privacy of the respondents.

Research Instrument

A structured survey questionnaire was developed for this study. It consists of two
parts. Part 1 covers the demographic profile of the respondents-teenagers in terms of
gender, age, and section. Part 2 covers the survey questions about the factors leading to
teenage rebellion.

Statistical Treatment of the Data

All the data gathered and treated using the following tools.

1. The researchers used the Slovin’s Formula in order to identify the appropriate
sample size of the study.
SLOVIN’S FORMULA is described as:
n=N/(1+Ne2)
2. The frequency of each response will be determined on the number of the
respondents who will check in the particular item. The Demographic Profile of the
respondents will be determined by using the formula of percentage.
Formula:
P=f/N (100)
Where:
P= percentage
16

f= frequency
N= number of respondents
3. The weighted mean was computed to get the average or central value of the
responses in every statement using this formula:
Formula:
WM=∑fx/N
Where:
fx= weighted frequency of response obtained by multiplying x or
weight for each item in the choices.
∑Fx= summation of the obtained fx on each item.
N= number of the respondent

This formula was used to quantify variables such as gender, age, section, and
factors of teenage rebellion.

Chapter V
CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
In this chapter, the researchers present the conclusions and recommendations.

Conclusions
The following are the conclusions based on the findings of the study.

1. The main cause of teenage rebellion, according to grade 11 and 12 HUMSS

students at Tanauan School of Craftsmanship and Home Industries (TSCHI),

is their intense need for parental attention.

21

2. Teenage rebellion is an important stage of freedom and self-discovery that

gives teenagers a chance to establish their identities, overcome obstacles, and

come out stronger than before.

3. Teenage rebellion is a normal and frequently essential stage of adolescent

growth. It gives people a way to define their identities, make their

individuality known, and get through the challenges of growing up.

4. A complex tapestry of adolescent growth is created by the different factors of

teenage rebellion, which is influenced by a combination of biological,

psychological, and social variables.

Recommendations

The following are the recommendations drawn on the findings of the study.

1. Researchers recommends that teenagers should consider expressing their

feelings openly and calmly to their parents, seeking their attention through

genuine conversations that allow for a deeper understanding of their needs and

concerns.
22

2. Parents and teenagers should encourage open communication, active listening,

and mutual respect to foster a supportive environment that helps navigate

teenage rebellion constructively.

3. Researchers advised that teenagers should engage in positive outlets such as

extracurricular activities, hobbies, or mentorship programs to channel

rebellious energy into constructive and fulfilling pursuits.

4. Researchers recommends that parents should foster a supportive and

communicative environment, coupled with setting clear boundaries and

demonstrating genuine interest in their child's perspective, can help parents

prevent or manage teenage rebellion.
