Air Pollution
Background Information for the Learners:
Air pollution is a mixture of solid particles and gases in the air. Car emissions,
chemicals from factories, dust, pollen and mold spores may be suspended as particles. Air
pollution can harm us when it accumulates in the air in high enough concentrations. People
exposed to high enough levels of certain air pollutants may experience:
 Irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat
 Wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and breathing difficulties
 Worsening of existing lung and heart problems, such as asthma
 Increased risk of heart attack
In addition, long-term exposure to air pollution can cause cancer and damage to the
immune, neurological, reproductive, and respiratory systems. In extreme cases, it can
even cause death. Air pollution is a problem for all of us. However, some groups of people
are especially sensitive to common air pollutants such as particulates and ground-level ozone.
Sensitive populations include children, older adults, people who are active outdoors,
and people with heart or lung diseases, such as asthma. If you are sensitive to air
pollution, you need to be aware of steps you can take to protect your health.

Major Classes of Air Pollutants
Directions: Search for the 6 major classes of air pollutants. Use the clues below.

 Thousands of different solid or liquid particles suspended in air.


 Gases produced by the chemical interactions between atmospheric nitrogen and
oxygen at high temperature.
 Examples include gases like carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO2).
 Gases produced by the chemical interactions between sulfur and oxygen.
 Diverse group of organic compounds that contain only hydrogen and carbon.
 It has two classifications: Tropospheric and Stratospheric.
