ABSTRACT

Two major clarification agents in double sulphitation process are Sulphur Di Oxide (SO2) and Milk of
Lime (MOL). A lot of work has been done on proper mixing of SO2 gas by providing different types of
spurger. This article is about the importance of proper mixing of MOL during shock liming in the juice
Sulphitor to maximize the removal of non-sugars and to improve clear juice quality. For proper mixing
of MOL during shock liming, an in line MOL mixing system is designed and comparative study is done
between the working of same juice Sulphitor with and without in line MOL mixing.
INTRODUCTION
There are mainly two popular types of liming which are being used in north India in DS process-
1. Simultaneous Liming
2. Shock Liming

We are using the shock liming and getting better results over simultaneous liming in terms of non-
sugar removal, turbidity of clear juice and colour reduction between mixed juice to clear juice.
Need of In Line MOL mixing arrangement was felt due to large variation in shock pH of the juice due
incomplete mixing of MOL in heated juice. In the old system(Figure 1A), when MOL was added in the
juice for shock liming, the stream of MOL was travelling along juice without proper mixing and mixing
was taking place only after juice entering at the bottom of juice Sulphitor with the help of a stirrer
inside the juice Sulphitor. Due to improper mixing of MOL at correct point time, there was variation in
clear juice quality also and purpose of 6-7 seconds duration of shock liming was also being defeated.
To overcome this problem we designed an In Line MOL Mixing arrangement as shown in Figure 1B
and 1C
In Line MOL Mixing System
It is a simple arrangement having a stirrer in the juice pipe line going to juice Sulphitor from recovery
tower. The position of stirrer is exactly at the point of MOL entry to enable 100% mixing of MOL with
the juice instantaneously.
Orientation : Vertical
Make : METS INDIA, PUNE
Type of drive : Planetary Drive
Input Power : 1 HP
RPM : 57.8
ADVANTAGES

With the help of In Line MOL Mixing, we were able to mix the complete quantity of MOL with juice
instantaneously and juice mixed with MOL travels for full shock liming time before coming into contact
with SO2 gas inside the juice Sulphitor resulting minimum variation in shock pH and maximum
removal of non sugars. A study was done between the working of juice Sulphitor, with and without IN
Line MOL mixing. Highlights of results are as under-

• CaO rise between M.J. and C.J. was reduced by 10%

• Turbidity of clear juice recorded up to 1.5
• Colour removal between M.J. and C.J. increased up to 10%
• Degree of scaling in evaporator bodies reduced substantially
• Improvement in Mud settling rate
• Reduction in Molasses% Cane
• Improvement and consistency in sugar quality
• Consistency in shock pH

CONCLUSION

Above data and results show that this system is very effective in terms of clarification process and
quality of end product. Total cost incurred in making this system was only Rs 25000.00. The RPM of
the stirrer can be increased up to 100 to get even better results.
