A Mixed Federated Learning approach for multi-class Medical Image

Segmentation
Batch No: CBIT/IT/2023-24/212
ABSTRACT

Medical Image Segmentation is a computer vision task that involves dividing an medical
image into multiple segments, where each segment represents a different object or structure of
interest in the image. The primary purpose of Medical image segmentation involves the extraction of
regions of interest (ROIs) from images, such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) or Computed
Tomography (CT) scans. The existing methods for training models that work on image segmentation
are based on a very unrealistic assumption that the training set for each client is in a similar fashion
and follows the same image supervision level.
Now a day, federated learning is an advanced approach to tackle distributed remote databases
to enable multiple clients together train a ML model without sharing data. Federated Learning
aggregates the local models trained at local data stores and uses as a global model for all entities.
Based on our survey, FedMatch addresses the challenge of leveraging unlabeled data from different
clients in federated learning. It does this by initially sharing a client-consistency matrix in the
embedding space to assign helper models to participating clients. However, there's a risk of privacy
leakage when sharing extra information beyond local model parameters, and FedAvg's approach
doesn't consider variations in supervision strength among clients. FedAvg also gives higher weights
to clients with weakly labeled or unlabeled data due to their higher accessibility. As a result, the
federated model may overly prioritize less informative clients, leading to suboptimal outcomes.
This Project is intended to develop federated learning system for medical image segmentation
enabling multiple medical institutions to collectively train a segmentation model without sharing
sensitive patient data featuring patient privacy is upheld, while model enhancement is facilitated. In
this project an approach called FedMix, employs a label-agnostic unified federated learning
framework for medical image segmentation using mixed image labels. In FedMix, each client
contributes to updating the federated model by efficiently utilizing all accessible labeled data. This
Project is intent to experiment using medical image datasets such as BUS, BUSIS, and UDIAT
dataset,HAM10K dataset for Medical Image Segmentation.
