MARKS OF QUALITY ASSESSMENT

I. INTENDED LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson the students are expected to:
1. Demonstrated understanding of Marks of Quality Assessment in education.
2. Recognize the connection of quality assessment in the performance of learners.
II. LEARNING CONTENTS/ SUBJECT MATTER
A. Marks of Quality Assessment
 Marks are awarded for individual assessment items, grades are awarded for
courses. A mark is the level of achievement against specified criteria for an
assessment item.
Example: (A mark of 30/40 for an assessment)
A grade is the overall level of achievement for a course, usually determined
by combining the marks of the individual assessment items that make up the
course. For example, adding the marks for an assignment (30/40), in-class
quiz (10/10) and a final exam (45/50) will provide you with your final
marks, (85/100) and the equivalent grade will be awarded at the end of the
course.
What is Quality Assessment
 Quality assessment is the data collection and analysis through which the degree of
conformity to predetermined standards and criteria are exemplified. If the quality,
through thus process found to be unsatisfactory, attempts are made to discover the
reason for this.
1.Quality Assessment are in accordance with contemporary view of learning and
motivation
 It means that the learner discover and construct meaning: set, plan and work to
realize their goals; associate and link information with existing knowledge in
meaning ways; think critically and creatively; develop self-monitoring skills have
positive expectation for learning and confidence in their skills; are enthusiastically
and internally motivated to learn; apply what they learn to real-world situation; and
communicate effectively.
2. Assessment of High Quality is Valid

1
 Assessment is valid if it measures what is supposed to measure, i.e., how well the
learning outcomes have been attained. A teacher must be true to his/her intended
learning outcome/s.
3.Assessment of High Quality is Reliable
 Assessment is reliable when the test produces consistent scores.

Example:
For Instance, you administer a test, some may get high and some get low score in
first take but in the second take those who got high received a low score and those
who got lower score in the first take has received high score. Hence, the assessment
is not reliable.
4. Assessment of High Quality is Fair
 It is fair if it assesses what is supposed to be assessed as stated in the learning
outcomes which is expected to have been taught. This is the principle of
constructive alignment in action. Obviously, assessing the learners on something
they have been taught is unfair.

Example: You teach your learners to sew using sewing machine but the task you give is
a test in which it does not achieve the supposed to be assessed based on the learning
objectives you have set.
