5 Description
Activity 1.1.1
Measurement orders in various scales.

We will use the metre scale and divide it into the

decimetre. Then, the decimetre is divided into ten
part showing one centimetre and the centimetre is
divided into ten divisions showing a millimetre.

The rope in four different colours is given to them to

measure four different lengths in the four orders.

Activity/Interaction
Length 1 metre, 8 decimetre, 40 centimetres and 100
millimetres is to be measured by the ropes of four
various colours.

Background
Classroom background.

Animations
1 metre can be shown to divide into 10 parts labelling
them as 1 decimeter. Show that 10x 1 decimetre is a
metre.
1 decimetre can be dvided into 10 parts labelling
them as 1 centimetre. Show that 10x 1 centiimetre is
a decimetre.

1 centimetre can be divided into ten parts labelling

them as 1 millimetre. Show that 10x 1 millimetre is a
centimetre.

Text – title and body (if any)

1 metre (m) = 10 decimetre (dm)
1 metre (m) = 100 centimetre (cm)
1 metre (m) = 1000 millimetre (mm)
Description
Activity 1.1.2
Measurement objects precisely in millimetre scales
by vernier callipers and screw gauge.

We will use a vernier callipers and a screw gauge to

measure the diameter of a metallic sphere.
The vernier callipers measures a precision to 0.01mm
and screw gauge measures precisely to 0.001 mm.

Activity/Interaction
 The metallic ball is to be inserted within the
jaws of the vernier callipers.
 The jaws are to be fixed in the position.
 Then, the metallic ball is to be inserted in the
screw gauge. The screw is fixed.

Animations
 As the ball is inserted into the jaws of the
callipers and it is fixed, the reading of the
main scale is taken by highlighting that.
 Then the reading of the vernier is taken.
 The screw gauge will be shown. The marking
on the screw will be highlighted.

Vernier Callipers:

The main scale measures in millimetre (mm).

Reading of main scale = (MAIN SCALE) mm.

Smallest division of the Vernier scale = 1 mm/

(10 divisions).
Reading of vernier scale = (VERNIER SCALE) *
0.1 mm.
Actual reading = Reading of main scale +
Reading of vernier scale.

Screw gauge:

The main scale measures in millimetre (mm).

Reading of main scale = (MAIN SCALE) mm.

Smallest division of the screw = (Total length

covered by the screw)/(No. of divisions on
screw)
= (1 mm) / 100 = 0.01 mm.
Reading of the screw = (SCREW SCALE) * 0.01
mm.
Actual reading = Reading of main scale +
Reading of the screw.
