This research study has a titled of " Challenges and Disadvantages of Multigrade teaching:

Qualitative Research" and it executes the issues and the difficulties face in multigrade teaching. This
study leads by a group of researchers from different universities in Iran.
The authors (Leila Khazaei, Parvin Ahmadi, Sedigheh Momeni far, Farideh Rahmani, Hamed
Bakhshi, Ayub Ali fat, Javad Gholipour, Reza Hosseinpour) from various universities deals with the
circumstances of Multigrade teaching, focusing on the specific issues and challenges face by the
teacher who need to guide students with opposite ages, capabilities and educational needs but with
the same classroom to use. The study uses a qualitative research method to find out the insights and
perspectives of the teachers who integrating Multigrade teaching. By conducting interviews also by
observing they figured out the different key issues like managing time and limited resources.
One of the results of this study is the effect of workload in multigrade teaching causing
educators stress, showing that curriculum developers and schools that education must be planned
well, an equal education for all. Providing them with facilities that they were going to study and
learn, resources and material that teacher may use in teaching. Besides, another problem of multi-
grade classrooms is the lack of educational justice. From their perspective, educational justice
means that the components related to education, including time, facilities, kind of evaluation,
authorities’ supervision and other related factors, are not equal for multi-grade and single-grade
classrooms {pg. 14o}. However, the researchers weight up the necessity of Multigrade teaching
students and educator that the system of education must undertake to build up the quality of
education even to diverse environment.
According to the extraction of axial codes, lack of time, lack of motivation, academic failure, lack of
proper class management, inappropriate age composition, lack of attention to individual
differences, lack of educational facilities, lack of educational justice and inadequate authorities’
support were identified as the challenges of multi-grade classrooms. In following, mentioned
challenges were addressed by direct quotes from participants {pg. 138}. The researchers provide
the readers a deeper understanding of complications or problems of Multigrade teaching. Multi-
grade classrooms are not the interest to teachers and the education system, but, in some situations,
applying multi-grade classrooms seems necessary and reasonable, due to low population density,
reduced number of enrolled students, lack of teachers and eco-nomic problems (Ford, 1997; Erdem
et al., 2005). One Strength of this research is that it focuses on the concept which is Multigrade
teaching to widespread in every educational system and specially to the remote and rural zone that
presented with limited when it comes to literatures. I'm trying to deal with this gap this study
highlighted the significance of how to understand the issues and challenges regarding to Multigrade
teaching. Another is when this research also provides valuable knowledge about classroom
management, since this is one of the major parts for teaching. In proper classroom management
teacher can ensure that all students are learning, but if its lacking with facilities and classroom it
might be hard to noticed all student’s outcomes and performances. Classroom management is very
important in the educational process of multi-grade classrooms because many students are forced
to spend their times quietly and aimlessly so that the teacher can be able to teach another group of
students or they are asked to read their books or other activities {pg.139}
However, this study had some weaknesses. I think while this study conducted and they are
identifying various of Challenges the Multigrade teachers face, I preferred if the study provide
solutions to every challenge, it falls short into bringing forward only few solutions or a
recommendation to the issues and challenges. By presenting strategies that can support Multigrade
teachers may perhaps strengthened the research that connection to the practitioner of education.
Additionally, this study will benefit probably if there get into the insights of parents and students
that take in their view of points into the disadvantages and challenges of Multigrade teaching.
Analyzing this research make me think that this research has comparison of the analysis of
Multigrade teaching such a mix grade and the single classroom. This comparison might cater the
ideas or insights about the disadvantages and challenges of Multigrade teaching.
Moreover, the authors look into how the shortage of personalized attention and the
instructions for the Multigrade classroom affect the achievement of the learners. In such
classrooms, the students’ rights are ignored compared to the students of single-grade classes
because educational time allocated to them is not equal to the one of the students of single-grade
class, so they cannot communicate with their teachers due to lack of time {pg. 139}. Throughout
their investigation and observation, they got the learners who strive from the curriculum or to fail
to look after into Multigrade settings, emphasizing the significance of adopting instructional
approaches in supporting the diverse students.
The study on disadvantages and challenges in multigrade teaching indicate the importance
of equality of education providing students equal materials and learnings and also emphasizing
teacher's wellbeing and the outcomes of the students. Exploring the precise examples, the authors
provide deeper understanding on the difficulties of Multigrade education and targeted the need
support of the both parties which is the learners and the educators in multigrade classroom.
I see this study to be good example for the students pursuing the course of education. Since
this study provides a lot of information regarding on the challenge that they might face with they
were in multigrade teaching. It addresses the difficulties that students and teachers faced in these
environments. Overall, I like to read this research study because of so many reasons, like knowing
all of this challenge gives me a knowledge on how to manage well a classroom of Multigrade.
Although I was already aware of these challenges it might better that this research is conducted so
that every future educator will gain also ideas on how to run a classroom of Multigrade. One aspect
of this research that surprised me was the challenges of workload stress of the teachers.
This study inspires me and strengthened my beliefs in the importance of focusing on
prioritizing equal education for all and supporting our teachers who are always have a will to teach
ever through the challenges they are facing. However, this research study makes me realize to
improve my teaching practice and be better in supporting diverse needs of the students.
Furthermore, as a student of Sorsu I have been beneficial to the resources and materials that
i can use in learning, while i understand that not all of the learners have the access to the same thing
as the support and opportunities to learn. While I’m not personally experience the Multigrade
classroom as a student but i already experience to struggle in studying in my previous school, lack
of resources like libraries, book and materials that can be used to study, also a teacher who taking
the teaching for us as a part time job and not attending to the class causing us to have limited
knowledge to the particular subject. This is why the school must have resources and materials also
teachers who will provide the needed learning of the students.
To conclude, this study highlighted the disadvantages and challenges of Multigrade teaching,
this study emphasizing the significance of how to address the diverse need of learners and not only
students but also supporting teachers to the effort they gave to provide a good quality of classroom
and learnings. As I am going to be a future educator, I will can use this study to practice my teaching
for equal education for all of the students.
