Fundamentals of Illumination
Assignment
1. Define (i) Mean spherical candle power (ii) Luminous
efficiency (iii) Space to height ratio.
2. Define each of terms of illumination. – lux, lumen,
luminous flux, illumination.
3. State the meaning of polar curve and give two applications
of it.
4. Explain lumens or light flux method for calculation of light.
5. Show that the illumination at any point (P) on the surface
due to a light source suspended at the height of 'h' from the
plane surface is = I.cosθ÷h^2
6. A lamp of 500 watts having mscp of 1000 is suspended 2.7
meters above the working plane. Calculate: i) Illumination.
directly below the lamp at the working plane.
(ii) Lamp efficiency

7. A 0.5 meter diameter diffusing sphere of opal glass (25%

absorption) encloses a lamp with luminous flux of 4800
lumens. Calculate average luminance of the sphere.
8. A room of 20 m x 10 m is illuminated 20 numbers of 200
W lamps. The MSCP of each lamp is 240 utilization factor
is 0.65 and depreciation factor 1.25 then find the average
illumination produced on the floor.
9. A hall 30 m x 12 m is to be provided with illumination of
50 m candles. Take depreciation factor = 1.3 and utilization
factor = 0.5. Find the number of lamps and show the
disposition. Using the following table for selecting lamps.

Watts 100 200 300 500 1000

Lumens 1615 3650 4700 9950 21.500

10. A hall of 80 m x 40 m with a ceiling height of 52 m is to

be provided with a general illumination of 150 lumens /
square meter. Assuming coefficient of utilization of 0.6 and
depreciation factor of 1.35, determine the number of
fluorescent tubes required, the distance between them
mounting height, total wattage. The luminous efficiency of
fluorescent tube is 35 lumens per watt for 40 watt tube
light.
