Module 1.2
Applying the Limit Law in Computing the Limit of Various Algebraic (Polynomial,
Rational, and Radical)

I. Course Outcome : CO1. Formulate and solve accurately real-life problems

involving continuity of functions
II. Learning Outcome/s : LO 1.2 Apply the limit law in computing the limit of various
algebraic (polynomial, rational, and radical).
III. Time Frame : 3 Hours
IV. Introduction/Outline :
In this module, you will apply the limit law in computing the limit of various algebraic
(polynomial, rational, and radical)

Below are key concepts for reading. Details of these concepts are discussed further in the
hand-outs attached herein.

Evaluating Limits

The Limit Laws

Theorem 1 – Basic Limit Laws

lim 𝑎 = 𝑎 lim 𝑥 = 𝑐 lim 𝑎𝑥 = 𝑎𝑐 lim 𝑥 𝑛 = 𝑐 𝑛

𝑥→𝑐 𝑥→𝑐 𝑥→𝑐 𝑥→𝑐

where a and c are real numbers and n is an integer.

Theorem 2 – Limit of a Constant Multiple

If a is any constant and lim 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝐿, then

𝑥→𝑐

lim 𝑎𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 𝑎 lim 𝑓(𝑥 ) = 𝑎𝐿.

𝑥→𝑐 𝑥→𝑐

Theorem 3 – Limit of a Sum and Difference

If lim 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝐿 and lim 𝑔(𝑥) = 𝑀, then

𝑥→𝑐 𝑥→𝑐

 lim(𝑓(𝑥 ) + 𝑔(𝑥 )) = lim 𝑓(𝑥 ) + lim 𝑔(𝑥 ) = 𝐿 + 𝑀

𝑥→𝑐 𝑥→𝑐 𝑥→𝑐
 lim(𝑓(𝑥 ) − 𝑔(𝑥 )) = lim 𝑓(𝑥 ) − lim 𝑔(𝑥 ) = 𝐿 − 𝑀
𝑥→𝑐 𝑥→𝑐 𝑥→𝑐

Note: These formulas may be extended to more than two functions.

Theorem 4 – Limit of a Product

If lim 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝐿 and lim 𝑔(𝑥) = 𝑀, then

𝑥→𝑐 𝑥→𝑐

lim(𝑓(𝑥)𝑔(𝑥)) = (lim 𝑓 (𝑥 )) (lim 𝑔(𝑥 )) = 𝐿𝑀.

𝑥→𝑐 𝑥→𝑐 𝑥→𝑐

Note: This may be extended to more than two functions.

Theorem 5 – Limit of a Quotient

If lim 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝐿 and lim 𝑔(𝑥) = 𝑀, then

𝑥→𝑐 𝑥→𝑐

𝑓(𝑥) lim 𝑓(𝑥) 𝐿

lim 𝑔(𝑥) = 𝑥→𝑐 = .
𝑥→𝑐 lim 𝑔(𝑥) 𝑀
𝑥→𝑐

where M ≠ 0.

Theorem 6 – Limit of a Power

If n is any positive integer and lim 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝐿, then

𝑥→𝑐

𝑛 𝑛
lim(𝑓(𝑥)) = (lim 𝑓(𝑥 )) = (𝐿)𝑛 .
𝑥→𝑐 𝑥→𝑐

Theorem 7 – Limit of a Radical

If n is any positive integer and lim 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝐿, then

𝑥→𝑐

𝑛
lim 𝑛√𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑛√lim 𝑓(𝑥) = √𝐿.
𝑥→𝑐 𝑥→𝑐

Limits of Algebraic Functions

Theorem 8 – Limit of a Polynomial Function

For a polynomial function f in terms of x,

lim 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 𝑓(𝑐)
𝑥→𝑐

Where c is any real number.

Theorem 9 – Limit of a Rational Function

For a rational function f in terms of x,

𝑝(𝑥) 𝑝(𝑐)
lim 𝑓(𝑥) = lim =
𝑥→𝑐 𝑥→𝑐 𝑞(𝑥) 𝑞(𝑐)
where c is any real number and q(c) ≠ 0.

Theorem 10 – Limit of a Radical Function

For a radical function f in terms of x

lim 𝑓(𝑥 ) = lim 𝑛√𝑝(𝑥) = 𝑛√lim 𝑝(𝑥)
𝑥→𝑐 𝑥→𝑐 𝑥→𝑐

where c is any real number, n is a positive integer, and p(c) > 0 if n is even.
