Laboratory Experiment 1

Viscosity of Liquids

Name: __________________________________________ Date Performed: _________________

Grade & Section: _________________________________ Date Submitted: _________________

Objectives:
1. To measure and explain the difference in the viscosity of some liquids;
2. To determine which liquid among a given set of liquids is the most viscous.

Materials:
Four 100-mL graduated cylinders honey
Four marbles glycerin
Cooking oil watch or timer
Syrup viscometer

Procedures:
1. Fill the first graduated cylinder with water, the
second graduated cylinder with corn syrup, the
third graduated cylinder with cooking oil, the fourth
graduated cylinder with honey. Leave enough space
(about 2-3 cm) at the top so the liquid does not
overflow. Each cylinder must be filled up to the
same height.

2. Simultaneously drop the marbles and record the time it takes for each marble to touch the
bottom of the cylinder.
3. Calculate the velocity of the marble through each liquid using the formula below.

velocity=distance /time
Data and Observations
Record the time and the velocities of the liquids in the data table below.

Liquid Time Velocity
