Experiment 1
Viscosity
I. Objectives
After performing the activity, you should be able to:
1. Define viscosity
2. Calculate for cP of the liquid samples; and
3. Explain the viscosities of the given liquid samples.

II. Materials
5 Marbles (same size)
100 ml graduated cylinder
250 ml Beaker
Triple beam balance
Stopwatch/timer
ruler

Water
Vinegar
Dishwashing liquid
Ketchup
Cooking oil

III. Procedure

1. Measure the mass of the marbles. Convert to kg. (1000 g= 1 kg)

2. In a graduated cylinder, measure 100 ml of each of the sample liquids given.
3. Using a ruler, measure the height of the liquid in the graduated cylinder. Convert
to m. (100 cm= 1 m)
4. Prepare the timer, and drop the marble in the graduated cylinder. Record the
time it takes for the marble to reach the bottom of the graduated cylinder.
5. Recover the marble and repeat the procedure 3x.
6. Calculate velocity and cPoise in Pa-s. Show your calculations.
Equation 1. v= d/t
Where v= velocity
d=height of the liquid m
t= time in s
Equation 2. µ = (weight of marble in kilograms) / (height of liquid) * (time)
Where µ= viscosity in Pa-s
