CE2A Module Assessment # 1

SOLUTION #1
Based on Figure 1. A 2.4-m boom is held by a ball-and-socket joint at C and by two cables AD and AE. If both cables have areas of
200mm2 and E = 200 GPa, G = 78 GPa
a) Find Axial Stress in the cable
b) Find change in area of the cable
Solution:

Convert each cable to forces

Tad = TAD(-0.8i + 0.6j – 2.4k)/

Tae = TAE(0.8i + 1.2j – 2.4k) /

Then for our direction vectors

Ra = 2.4k
Rb = 1.2k
SOLUTION #1
; Ra x Tad + Ra x Tae + Rb x (-3)

i J K i J K i J K
0 0 2.4 0 0 2.4 0 0 1.2
(TAD/2.6) + (TAE/2.8) + =0
-0.8 0.6 -2.4 0.8 1.2 -2.4 0 -3.6 0

TAD(-0.554i – 0.738j) + TAE(-1.029i + 0.687j) + 4.32i = 0

Then since M = 0 then Mx = My = Mz = 0

At Mx = 0
-0.554TAD – 1.029TAE + 4.32 = 0 (equation 1)
At My = 0
-0.738TAD + 0.687TAD = 0 (equation 2)
Two Equation Two unknown
TAD = 2.6 kN , TAE = 2.8 kN
SOLUTION #1
Two Equation Two unknown Then get the diameter
TAD = 2.6 kN , TAE = 2.8 kN A=

Then for Axial Stress if Areas are both 200mm2 Then change in diameter
Stress AD = 2.6(1000)/200 = 13MPa
Stress AE = 2.8 (1000)/200 = 14 Mpa

Then for change in areas of the cable New diameters

Dad = 15.95769 - = 15.95740
Dae = 15.95769 - = 15.95738
Then get the strain
Then change in areas
E = Stress / Strain

For AD
200(1000) = 13/
For AE
200(1000) = 14/
SOLUTION #2
A 300 x 400 x 600 mm block is under Compressive Stresses of if E = 150 GPa and G = 53 Gpa
Determine the change of cross-sectional area assuming that 600mm part is its length
Determine the change of Lateral Surface Area
Determine the change of Volume

Solution:

Then since this is a compressive stress therefore the 300 and 400 will compress yet our 600mm will elongate
G = E/2(1+V) ; 53 = 150/[2(1+v)] ; v = 0.415
0.000145
0.0000503
Change of Dimensions New dimensions
0.0435 X = 300 – 0.0435 = 299.957 mm
0.020 Y = 400 – 0.020 = 399.98 mm
SOLUTION #2
Change in Area
(300)(400) – (299.957)(399.98) = -23.199 mm2

For LSA remember this is a block then. It is already known that if we put two biaxial loads at a rectangular block it will
elongate using this equation.

0.000138
-0.083

Then for new Length = 600 + 0.083 = 600.083 mm

Lateral Surface Area - Lateral Surface Area

[(600)(300)(2) + (600)(400)(2)] – [(600.083)(299.957)(2) + (600.083)(399.98)(2)]
= -40.590 mm2

Change in volume = (600)(400)(300) – (600.083)(299.957)(399.98) = - 3961.410 mm3

SOLUTION #3
A Hollow shaft of diameter ratio 3/8 required to transmit 600kW at 110 rpm, the maximum torque being 20% greater than
the mean. The Shear stress is not to exceed 63MPa and the twist in a length of 3m does not exceed 1.4 degrees. Assume
that the Modulus of Rigidity is 84GPa
Determine the diameter of the shaft

Solution:
Inner Diameter = d P = Tw
Outer Diameter = D 600(1000) = T(11.519)
T(ave) = 52087.854 N-m
d = 3/8 D T mean = 1.2T(ave)
T = 62505425.82 N-mm
Max Torque = 1.2T
P = 600kW becomes
w = 110()(1/60) = 11.519 rad/s
D = 172.746 then d = 64.780 mm
SOLUTION #3
Solution:
For angle of twist

D = 175.014 mm
d = 65.630 mm

We choose D = 175.014 mm
Say D = 180 mm and d = 68mm say 70mm

portion located 100mm from the top of the beam the hollow portion is about 200 x 400 mm. Assuming that concrete weighs 23.56kN/m3

Draw the cross section first

Get the total Area

400mm
700mm
Awhole = 400(700) = 280000mm2
A hollow = 200(400) = 80000 mm2
A total = Awhole – A hollow
A total = 280000 – 80000 = 200000 mm2
Uniform Load = (23.56)(200000)(1/1000)(1/1000) 200mm
Uniform Load = 4.712 kN/m
SOLUTION #5
