Presenting New Lesson
What was our lesson last meeting? - Ma’am, Two-point form and Point-slope form.

That’s right.
Who can give me the form for Two-points? y 2− y 1
- y− y 1= ¿
x2− x1
How about the One-point form?
- y− y 1=m¿
Ok, very good!
I have a question, who among of you are playing candy crush?
That’s great. Me, Ma’am! (the students are shouting)

Ashley loves to play ‘Candy Crush’, she aims to earned

the specific number of coins to proceed to the next
level. Ashley has already earned 320 coins and he can
earn 80 coins for every level competed.

1. What is the given information?

2. What is asked?
3. What linear equation can be formulated to represent the total
number of coins earned in a game?
(the students are not yet answering)
4. How many stars will Ashley have earned after playing 5
levels? 6 levels? 7 levels?
To formally answer those questions. Allow me to reveal our new
topic.
So, class, our new discussion is all about Solving Problems
Involving Linear Equations in Two Variables.

- Let us recall that a solution of an equation in two variables x

and y is any ordered pair (x, y) that makes the equation true.
To determine whether an ordered pair (x, y) is a solution of
an equation, we will just substitute the values of x and y in to
the equation.

B. Establishing a Purpose for the (the teacher pastes a visual aids)

Lesson
- There are many real-life situations that exhibit linear
equation in two variables. Here are the steps in solving
problems involving linear equations in two variables:
1. Read and understand the problem.
2. Translate the problem into equation in two variables.
3. Find the solution using the formulated equation.
4. Check the solution obtained by substituting the
solutions/s to the original equations.

C. Presenting For further explanation and deepen your understanding, let us go

Examples/Instances of the back to Ashley’s problem.
Lesson

Ashley loves to play ‘Candy Crush’, she aims to earned

the specific number of coins to proceed to the next
level. Ashley has already earned 320 coins and he can
earn 80 coins for every level competed.

Step 1. UNDERSTANDING THE PROBLEM.

Given:

 Ashley has 320 coins

 Ashely can earn 80 coins in every level completed of the
game.
1. What is asked? The total number of coins Ashely can
earn after playing for x level/s.
Let x be the number of levels completed in the game.
Let y be the total number of coins earned in completing the level.

Step 2. TRANSLATE THE PROBLEM IN TO AN EQUATION

IN TWO VARIABLES.
Using the information above, we can construct a table for us to
clearly visualize and understand.

Level
completed 1 2 3 4
(x)
Number of
80 (2) + 80 (3) + 80 (4) +
coins 80 (1) + 320
320 320 320
earned (y)

Level
completed 1 2 3 4
(x)

Number of
coins earned 400 480 560 640
(y)

The situation can be modelled as y = 80x + 320

STEP 3. FIND THE SOLUTION USING THE FORMULATED

EQUATION

To determine the number of coins earned after playing the game in 5

levels, use the equation obtained in Step 2 and substitute the value of
x.

y = 80x + 320
y = 80 (5) + 320
y = 400 + 320
y = 720
The number of coins earned after completing 6 levels of playing will
be;

y = 80x + 320
y = 80 (6) + 320
y = 480 + 320
y = 800
The number of coins earned after completing 7 levels of playing will
be;
y = 80x + 320
y = 80 (7) + 320
y = 560 + 320
y = 880
STEP 4. CHECK THE SOLUTION OBTAINED BY
SUBSTITUTING THE SOLUTION/S TO THE ORIGINAL
EQUATIONS.

x=5 x=6 x=7

y = 720 y = 800 y = 880
y = 80x + 320 y = 80x + 320 y = 80x + 320
720 = 80 (5) + 320 800 = 80 (6) + 320 880 = 80 (7) + 320
720 = 400 + 320 800 = 480 + 320 880 = 560 + 320
720 = 720 800 = 800 880 = 880

The number of coins earned after completing the ‘Candy Crush’

levels 5, 6, and 7 are 720 coins, 800 coins, and 880 coins,
respectively.

Does everybody get the lesson?

Do you have any clarification or questions about the example?

- Yes Ma’am.
- (students’ questions may vary)

D. Discussing New Concepts and For you to understand well the lesson, let us have again another (the students are listening)
Practicing New Skills#1 example.
EXAMPLE #1.

A dress maker charges ₱750.00 for sewing a seat

STEP 1.

 What is the value of x? and y?  Let x be the number of seats covers made
 Let y be the total amount to be paid for seat cover plus the
STEP 2. y = 100x + 750 charges.
STEP 3. Use the equation obtained in step 2 to solve the problem.
Since the number of seat cover to be made is 20.
y = 100x + 750

y = 100 (20) + 750

y = 2000 + 750

y = 2, 750

STEP 4. Check answers directly against the facts of the problems.

Substitute the value of x and y to the equation.

y = 100x + 750

2, 750 = 100 (20) + 750

2, 750 = 2000 + 750

2, 750 = 2, 750

Therefore, the total amount to be paid is ₱ 2, 750

EXAMPLE #2
STEP 1.

 Let x be the charge per succeeding kilometers

 Let y is the total cost.

STEP 2.

Kilometers
10 11 12 13
(x)

Total Cost
20 23 26 29
(y)

To formulate the equation using the table of values, we can choose

any two points in the form (x, y) from the table to find the slope;

For example, let use choose (12, 26) and (13, 29)

Let us use the Slope Formula and substitute.

x 1 = 12, y 1=26

x 2 = 13, y 2=29

y 2− y 1
m=
x 2−x 1

29−26
m=
13−12
3
m= ∨3
1

After we find the slope, we are going to find the y-intercept by using
the Slope-intercept form; y = mx + b.

m = 3 and (12, 26)

y = mx + b
26 = 3 (12) + b
26 = 36 + b
26 – 36 = b
-10 = b
We have now the value of y-intercept which is -10. Therefore, using
the table above, we come up to the equation
y = 3x – 10
STEP 3.
Use the equation obtained in step 2 to solve the problem. It asks for a
total cost of a 25 km ride, substitute x in the equation by 25.
y = 3x – 10
y = 3(25) – 10
y = 75 – 10
y = 65
STEP 4. Check the answer directly against the facts of the problems.
Substitute the value of x and y to the equation
y = 3x – 10
65 = 3(25) – 10
65 = 75 – 10
65 = 65 - Answer may vary
The lesson is little bit harder. Did you understand the lesson?

x x
y y

Total amount saved = (savings per week x number of weeks)

+ _________________________________ Total amount saved = (savings per week x number of weeks)
y = _________________ + Initial amount of savings
y = 75x + 500

y = 75x + 500
y = _____ + 500
2375 = 75 (25) + 500
2375 = 75 (____) + 500
2375 = 1875 + 500
2375 = _____ + 500
2375 = 2375 TRUE
2375 = _____ ________

Therefore, Richard needs to save for 25 weeks.

Therefore, Richard needs to save for _____ weeks.
