Preventing False Alarms
10 Points to Remember

1. Persons who have been correctly trained must only operate the fire alarm system. If
you are unsure of the correct operational procedures contact your alarm company.

2. Before leaving the premises, check that all doors and windows are closed. A walk
around the protected area is the only effective way of doing this properly, and to
prevent unnecessary false alarms from activities external to the protected area.

3. Ensure that detection devices are not obstructed. In particular be careful that stock
or other items do not obstruct beam detectors. Check that there is no unstable
stock, and ensure that no birds or stray animals are present.

4. Do not allow sources of heat, smoke or dust to be in the range of automatic

detection. Particular regard should be made of kettles, toasters and other sources of
heat, steam and smoke.

5. Always ensure that the responsible person is informed of any works being carried
out which may affect the fire alarm system. Examples include; hot-work, demolition,
boring / cutting etc.

6. Do not isolate devices that cause false alarms. Carry out root cause analysis and fix
the source i.e. change the activity or change the method of detection.

7. Inform your alarm company of any changes of use of your premises, which may
affect the method of detection provided.

8. Inform your alarm company of any alterations to your premises, which may affect
your alarm system.

9. Treat your alarm system with care. Wiring and detection devices can be accidentally
damaged or moved. Should this occur inform your alarm company immediately.

10. After a false alarm, check carefully and, where possible, note the cause of activation.
Inform the alarm company of the cause. If no cause can be found contact your alarm
company immediately.

11. Make sure your alarm company carries out regular maintenance checks. Remember
that excessive false alarms will give rise to Fire & Rescue Service response being
withdrawn.

Adherence to the 10 points in this list will go a long

way towards ensuring that you premises always
receive Fire & Rescue Service attendance at the right time.
