CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION OF THE RESEARCH

Background of the Study
ICT, or Information and Communication Technology, encompasses a vast
lexicon of technical terms and acronyms integral to our digital landscape. These
terms serve as the foundation for understanding the intricacies of this field. Notable
among them are "hardware," denoting the tangible components of computing
devices, and "software," referring to the applications and programs that run on
these devices. The "internet" is a global network linking countless computers, while
"cybersecurity" entails safeguarding these systems from threats. "Cloud computing"
involves the delivery of computing services over the internet, and "Big Data"
addresses the management and analysis of vast data sets. "AI" focuses on imbuing
machines with human-like intelligence, and "IoT" pertains to the interconnection of
everyday objects with the internet. Meanwhile, "VoIP" enables voice
communication online, and "VPN" ensures secure and private internet usage.
"API," or Application Programming Interface, facilitates communication between
software applications, and the domain of cybersecurity introduces terminology
related to ethical hacking and digital defense strategies.
Digital technology in our daily lives has significantly transformed the way we
live, work, and learn. In an era where technology is everywhere, it has become
increasingly essential for individuals, especially Information and Communication
Technology (ICT) students, to adapt and utilize the potential of these digital tools.
Many people find it difficult to understand information technology (IT) jargon in
today's society.
This challenge applies to both professionals and students. Attempting to
memorize these complex terms is often less effective than desired. When
confronted with these intricate topics, people frequently turn to their smartphones
dictionary app that serves as a guide for Information and Communication
Technology (ICT) students at Anselmo A. Sandoval Memorial National High School.
Research Questions:
1. What are the key features of interactive dictionary apps that support
language learning among ICT students?
2. How do ICT students perceive the usefulness and usability of interactive
dictionary apps compared to other digital language learning resources they have
used?
3. Can interactive dictionary apps be tailored to meet the unique needs and
preferences of different ICT student subgroups (e.g., based on language
proficiency level, learning style)? If so, how can these tailored approaches optimize
language learning outcomes?
4. What are the potential challenges or limitations of using interactive
dictionary apps as a primary language learning tool for ICT students, and how can
they be addressed?
5. How does the use of interactive dictionary apps influence ICT students'
overall attitudes towards language learning and their willingness to continue
studying languages in the future?

The Current Landscape of ICT Education
Information and communication technology (ICT) has revolutionized the
educational landscape, irrevocably altering classroom dynamics and pedagogical
approaches. Students are no longer confined to traditional methods, readily
integrating smartphones and devices into their learning activities. This shift extends
beyond mere device utilization; it has fundamentally reshaped the way classes are
