Answers to Questions (20 points)

Q1. For a vernier caliper with the smallest division of 0.02mm, its instrument
error is 0.02mm and its reading error is 0.
Q2. Young’s modulus is an inherent material property, which identifies the
relationship between the deformation of a body subject and the load on it.
Stress F ×L 8 FLD
Its equation is E= = = 2 . There are five quantities
Strain A × ∆ L π d ∆ nb

need be measured. They are L(the original length of the wire), D(the
distance between the plane mirror and the measuring scale), b((the
distance from the back metal toe to the line between two front metal toes),
d(the diameter of the wire) and ∆ n(the difference in readings of
measuring scale between the initial and final situations). I think the most
critical quantity is ∆ n. Because it has the least significant figures in the
quantities of the equation of E, its accuracy influences the results most.
And in the experiment, it is measured the most complex using the method
of successive minus.
Q3. It uses the reflection of ray to augment the very small elongation of the
2D
wire. Its magnification is k= , in which D is the distance between the
b
plane mirror and the measuring scale and b is the distance from the back
metal toe to the line between two front metal toes.
