Answers to Questions (20 points)

Q1. This tube has a structure called electron gun which makes electrons
from a source get accelerated by the high voltage from a positively
charged anode and focused by a electrode grid. The generated beam of
electrons then passes through X and Y deflection plates, where it gets
deflected horizontally and vertically. And each set of plates is applied a
voltage consistent with the voltage function of a signal. In the final stage of
the process, the controlled beam sweeps a screen in some patterns and the
screen then produces waveform displays.
Q2. The horizontal axis of the oscilloscope screen represents time and the
vertical axis represents voltage. When measuring AC voltage signals, we
can use the vertical axis of the screen to find the amplitude of the signal
and use the horizontal axis to find the frequency of the signal.
Q3. By using X-Y working mode of the oscilloscope, another input voltage
resource can replace the sawtooth voltage in the horizontal deflection.
Therefore, the X and Y deflection plates are both applied voltages
determined by voltage inputs, which in turn control the beam of electrons
to sweep the screen in particular patterns both in horizontal and vertical
directions. Separately, on the screen are two perpendicular waveforms in
some patterns, one along the horizontal axis and the other along the
vertical axis. When there are two perpendicular sine waves, they can
form a stable closed pattern, a Lissajous pattern. Since the frequency,
amplitude, or phase of either X or Y sine input signal can be changed,
there can be different Lissajous patterns displayed on the screen.
