Hatua Network 5-Year Strategic Planning Consultant TOR

Organization Overview:

Hatua Network’s mission is to end generational poverty by preparing promising youth from low-
income families to thrive in Kenya's modern economy. We do this by providing youth with
scholarships, mentoring focused on soft skills, and links to professional networks.

Our Scholarships provide for students’ educational needs through high school and university. Our
in-person and online mentoring programs develop students’ communication, collaboration,
emotional intelligence, problem-solving, and responsibility skills. Our career coaching and
employer partnerships programs support our students to build professional networks and secure
job opportunities. As a result youth that would have dropped out of school after primary and
remained trapped in a cycle of generational poverty instead build successful careers.

We are on the verge of serving 1,000 youth, including 200 alumni who have completed our
program. Among our alumni, 94% are working within 1 year of graduating, earning an average
income of 40,000/- Ksh per month. This is 3x the average total household income of students who
join our program and 5x the average income of Kenyans without education. Projected outward,
this will result in a 20x return on investment in increased lifetime income.

This not only transforms the lives of our alumni but also creates a fundamental change in their
family’s circumstances. Already, our alumni have helped educate more than 300 children and
youth, including younger siblings, nieces, nephews, and neighbors.

Looking ahead, we intend to make our mentoring curricula and career coaching resources
available to organizations free of charge to increase access to soft skills education in Africa.

By providing youth born into poverty with access to education, mentoring, and professional
networks- the same opportunities we all aspire to provide to our own children- we successfully
end the cycle of generational poverty. To us, this is the full meaning of equity. Read more about
