Lubricating system
The clean oil is injected into the engine by fuel injection pump.
A silencer ﻛﺎﺗم ﺻوتis usually incorporated in the system to reduce the noise level.4
Chapter 5: Diesel Power Plant
iv. Cooling system:
Consists of a water source, pump and cooling towers.
The water takes away heat form the engine and itself becomes hot.
The hot water is cooled by cooling towers and is re-circulated for cooling.
v. Lubricating system:
The lubricating oil is drawn from the lubricating oil tank by the pump and is
passed through filters to remove impurities.
The clean lubricating oil is delivered to the points which require lubrication.
Small sets are started manually by handles but for larger units, compressed air is
used for starting.

Chapter 5: Diesel Power Plant
■■■ Advantages:
1. Simple design & layout of plant.
2. Occupies less space & is compact.
3. Can be started quickly and picks up load in a short time.
4. Requires less water for cooling.
5. Thermal efficiency better than of Steam Power plant of same size.
6. Overall cost is cheaper than that of Steam Power plant of same size.
7. Requires no Operating staff.
8. No stand-by losses.
■■■ Disadvantages:
1. High running charges due to costly price of Diesel.
2. Plant does not work efficiently under prolonged overload conditions.
3. Generates small amount of power.
4. Cost of lubrication very high.
5. Maintenance charges are generally high.
6. The plant can only generate small power.
