Lesson Prepare a List of Masonry Tools and
1 Materials for a Specific Job

Masonry is the structural construction of component parts laid in and bound

together by a material called a mortar. The production of masonry units should
generally conform to the requirements in the 2003 International Building Code (IBC)
Section 2103.

What’s In

Directions: Do the following tasks. Write your answers/responses in your activity

notebook. (5 points each)
1. Explain briefly the meaning of masonry.
2. What are the common masonry tools and materials according to their types
and uses?

Note to the Teacher

There are tasks that involve actual performances. Since face-to-
face is not allowed during this pandemic, you may design a new
activity or supplemental activity that you think is best for your
students.
For the task, if the tools are not available at home, think of
ways on how the students can perform the given task.
Let their knowledgeable elder guide them in all their tasks.

3
What’s New

Have you seen walls of beautiful buildings and monuments? How are they
made attractive and structurally durable? Those are just some works in masonry.
Masonry can be defined in so many ways depending on uses or purposes.
Therefore, let’s define it on the structural context according to the purpose of this
module.

Let’s have fun with masonry through this creative poem!

What is It

MASONRY MATERIALS

Masonry stones are in various forms and set in different patterns depending
on certain considerations. Such stones chosen for various purposes have several
varieties:

1. Ashlar is a quarry cut to produce smooth, flat bedding surface that stack
easily. It is generally cut into small rectangles with sawed or dressed face.

2. Random ashlar is an arrangement of stones where in various sizes are used

to make courses that are not continuous for the whole length of the wall.
However, course ashlar has a formal appearance.

4
3. Rubble is a stone that is irregular in size, shape and texture. Field stone is
one type of rubble. Random rubble is usually dry-laid but can also be
mortared. Course rubble has a neater appearance than random rubble but
more difficult to construct and requires a large selection of stones.

BRICKS

A brick is a type of block used to make walls, pavements and other elements
in masonry construction. It is made of clay and other materials processed into
workable consistency, molded to sizes, and fired in a kiln for stronger and more
attractive product. There are three classifications of bricks:

1. Common Bricks are made from clay

and sold at the market

5
2. Face Bricks are used for exterior
and interior walls and other
architectural structures.

3. Calcium Silicate Bricks are made

with alumina and silica and are used for
furnaces and other structures that
require higher temperature up to 178 ˚
C.

Brick Laying and Patterns

Bricks are laid in horizontal or vertical layer with a string or nylon cord as
guide. The vertical layer of bricks is guided by a plumb line wherein the mortar
having a thickness of 3 to 10 mm. is placed between layers.

BLOCKS. There are many types of blocks which are most widely used as masonry
materials.

The CHB (sometimes called as

concrete hollow block) is used
for all the types of construction
walls, partitions, dividers,
fences, etc. Generally, a block
consists of an outside shell
with a hollow center that is
divided by two or three vertical
webs. The end unit may have
flanges that accept mortar and
join with the other adjacent
blocks (except blocks intended
for corners and the end of
walls).

MASONRY TOOLS

Appropriate tools are adopted in masonry to suit the kind of work involved. They are
classified into two categories.

1. Roughing Tools
2. Surface Finishing Tools

1. Roughing up tools are those tools necessary in the process of preparing,

arranging, forming, laying, and shaping of bricks, stones, and masonry blocks.
Tools of this type of work are mostly striking tools such as:
7
Mason’s axe or hammer - is also
known as Axe-Hammer used in two
different ways. The axe to serve as a
chisel and the hammer for driving
nails and other rough work in
masonry.

Patent Hammer – A two-faced

hammer, each of whose faces is
composed of a number of parallel thin
chisels; used for dressing stone.

Brick Hammer – also known as

a brick hammer, has one flat
traditional face and a short or long
chisel-shaped blade. It can thus
be used to chip off edges or small
pieces of stone, cut brick or a
concrete masonry unit, without using
a separate chisel.

Crandall – a tool for dressing stone,

having adjustable, pointed, and steel
rods held in a slot at the end of the
handle.

Cold Chisel – is a tool made of

tempered steel used for cutting 'cold'
metals, meaning that they are
not used in conjunction with heating
torches, forges, etc.

Star drill – a steel rock drill with

a star-shaped point that is used for
making holes in stones or masonry; it
is operated by hitting the end with a
hammer while rotating it between
blows.

8
Bolster – is designed for cutting brick
and stone, making it cleaner, more
exact cuts through material.

Wrecking baron – is a heavy metal

device with one end flattened, split
to create a 'V' for pulling nails from
objects and curved so can be used
in a lever action for prying and
demolishing. The other end is
machined into a chisel shape to
be used for prying items apart again
with the action of levering.

2. Surface Finishing Tools are tools used for smoothening, roughening,

plastering, and finishing surfaces with mortar or plaster. Tools of this type are the
following:

A. Float - is a tool used to finish a concrete surface by making it smooth.

A float is used after the surface has been made level using a screed. In
addition to removing surface imperfections, floating will compact
the concrete as preparation for further steps.

What’s More

Directions: Use your activity notebook for your answers.

Suppose you were told to improve the appearance of the rough concrete
surface of the front wall of your house. The problem is your tight budget. What
masonry materials and tools will you use? Why do you choose such materials and
tools? What will you do to determine the right quality of the materials needed?

REMINDER

Basic Safety Rules for Hand Tools

 Always wear eye protection.

 Wear the right safety equipment for the job.
 Use tools that are the right size and right type for your job.
 Follow the correct procedure for using every tool.
 Don’t work with oily or greasy hands.
 Handle sharp-edged and pointed tools with care.
 Always carry pointed tools by your side with the points and heavy
ends down.
 Secure all small work & short work with a vise or clamp.
 Never carry tools in your pockets.
 Don’t use tools which are loose or cracked.
 Keep your punches & chisels in good condition. Mushroomed
heads can chip &
cause injuries.
 Don’t try to increase your leverage by using a “cheater” with a
wrench. Wrenches
are designed at the right strength for their size and length.
 After using a tool — clean it and return it to its proper storage place.
 If anything breaks or malfunctions — report it to your supervisor
at once.
 Use the right type of tool for the job.
 Never place tools and materials where they hang on the edge of a
bench.
 Don’t use tools for things they weren’t meant for.
 Store tools and materials vertically, with the points and heavy end
down.
 Cut away from yourself when you use chisels and other edged
tools.

What I Can Do

Directions: Brick making is more of an art and you’ll likely take a few tries to perfect
your own signature recipe.

Important Note: Always observe safety precautions when doing an actual task.
Your knowledgeable elder will guide you in this activity.

Tools and materials needed:

 Dirt (the sturdiest bricks come from dirt with a clay content of 25 to 50 percent)
 Sand
 Straw, grass or pine needles
 Water
 Sunlight
 A mold to shape the bricks

Procedure:
1. Mix soil and water into a thick mud. Add some sand, then mix in the straw,
grass or pine needles.
2. Pour the mixture into your molds.
3. Bake bricks in sunshine for five days or so. If cracks appear, cover the bricks
so they’re not in direct sunlight. Remove the bricks from the molds and let
them dry a few more days.
4. Are your bricks strong enough? Test them by dropping one from about hip-
high. If it breaks, it probably has too much sand in it. Cracks that formed
after drying could mean the dirt you used has too much clay.
5. Evaluate the finished project based on the performance assessment criteria
given below.

Assessment

Activity under What I Can Do will serve as your assessment.

Directions: Check the appropriate acceptability rating based on your honest
personal evaluation of your output. Your teacher will guide you.
