Describe how you would incorporate an Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing


Opportunity in your classroom:
During the introduction of the assignment, the teacher will share an introduction of the Global
Grocery List website and the goal of the project. The teacher will showcase to students how to access
the website and being to share regulations with students, ensuring internet safety when using the site.
For here, students will be provided with step-by-step instructions on their project and how they will
use the website to complete this. Students will use the grocery list provided on the Global Grocery
List website to determine which items at their local grocery store they will locate the pricing. Students
will find the pricing of each item and collect their data to be submitted in class. Because this
assignment may have varying answers, students will be assessed based on their level of completion
for the assignment. This data will be used as a tool for students to use when completing their in-class
project.
During the following class period, the teacher will introduce the lesson by explaining the instructions
for the class assignment. The teacher will provide students with a list of students’ data for each
grocery store item. Students will be placed in small groups and each group will be assigned a set of
grocery store items to find the mean (average) price. As students are working, the teacher will walk
around to informally assess students on their ability to find the mean based on their background
knowledge and guide students when assistance is needed. Once each group has completed their work,
the class will transition to a whole class discussion. During the class discussion, a student from each
group will choose a grocery store item to showcase their steps for finding the mean price. The teacher
will use the collected data to share to the Global Grocery List website as students from each group
share their mean data for their group’s respective items. This also allows other students to record the
missing items in their data. As students share their data, the teacher will confirm their answers to
ensure that each student has the correct data. To extend this lesson, students may practice finding the
mean prices for items their group did not work on.
What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a
classroom? Access to computers or other mobile devices, such as a tablet, will be required to access
the website and implement the proposed learning activity.

allows students to collect original data of grocery store items as they explore the prices of these
items at their local grocery store. Students are able to engage in a real-life application of
mathematics as they create data and use this data further within the class. (type here)

data to apply in class when determining the mean prices of each item, creating an averaged
price list to be entered on the Global Grocery List website.

d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their product:
When students collect their data regarding the pricing of different items found at their local
grocery store, students will submit their data in class to be averaged with other student’s data
for each item. From here, the final product will be submitted to the website to contribute to the
average pricing on a US grocery list.

Using the Global Grocery List Project, students are able to engage as the actively search for the prices
of their grocery store items. This project can become personal to the students as they collect data from
a grocery store they may visit often or is a personal favorite of theirs, extending the students learning
outside of the classroom. Within the classroom, students are able to use this real-life application when
applying their data to finding the mean prices of their grocery items. Performing their task in small
groups allows students to collaborate with their peers as they compare their prices with others and
work together to find the mean prices. This project allows students to participate in a student-led
activity as they independently collect their individual data and use their data to work in groups,
independent of the teacher’s guidance unless necessary. The student led atmosphere gives students the
opportunity to activate their background knowledge and critically think.
Lesson idea implementation and Internet Safety Policies:
This learning experience may be implemented and still comply with the Internet Safety and Student
Privacy by asking students to submit their original price data in class on a piece of paper rather than
the website. This protects student’s identity and prevents students from sharing personal information
via the website. Once the class has collected the average pricing of each item, the teacher may submit
the average prices to the website to support the project and to again prevent students from sharing any
personal information.

Reflective Practice:
The physical engagement and personal learning incorporated within the learning activity impacts
students as they can better comprehend and remember their learning for future reference. The lesson
idea is intended to be student-led to provide students with opportunity to critically think and
positively affect their learning. Furthermore, when students participate in peer collaboration, it
increases their engagement with their learning. This lesson may be extended by asking students to
complete practice problems on Khan Academy relating to finding the mean. The lesson may also
extend to the technology used. The teacher may showcase how to use Excel spreadsheets to input data
and allow it to calculate the mean.
