classroom.

Integrative learning is an approach where the learner brings together prior

knowledge and experiences to support new knowledge and experiences. By doing
this, learners draw on their skills and apply them to new experiences at a more
complex level. The concept behind integrative learning is that students take
ownership of their own learning, becoming critical inquiries who are able to make
meaningful connections between different disciplines and utilize critical thinking to
real-life problems.

John Dewey claimed that learning could be more meaningful if content areas are
blended for curriculum and instruction. The use of unifying themes and real-life
activities could lead to more relevant learning (Dewey, 1938; New, 1992).

Using the integrative approach to teaching combines many subjects into single
lessons. The idea behind the theory is that students receive maximum learning by
acquiring knowledge and skills in more than one area in the same time-frame.
Integrating lessons can be done with any subjects, such as mixing language arts
with art by researching famous artists and then writing a report or math and
physical education where students play basketball while assigning different shots to
equal point values. The possibilities for integrated lessons are endless.

Integrating our lesson in a subject area can make our teaching and learning
process more meaningful. For example, if our topic in Araling Panlipunan 1 is about
“Nailalarawan ang bawat kasapi ng sariling pamilya sa pamamagitan ng likhang
sining”. We can integrate the art in this competency. We can let our learners draw
their family members or make a family tree by that we can enhance their skills in
drawing.
We can also integrate values on how they give importance to their families by asking
question or giving them a scenario and let them answer the questions.
