AP Physics 1: Forces Assessment 1 Name:

Ramon pushes horizontally on a bed as shown in the figure below. The bed is touching the wall and the bed does not
move significantly when Ramon is pushing on it. Draw a free body diagram showing all the forces acting on the bed.
Clearly label each of the forces.

AP Physics 1: Forces Assessment 2 Name:

A student is investigating the effect of a varying unbalanced force on the time it takes for a cart to travel a fixed 1.00
m distance along a level track. The mass of the cart is kept constant and the cart is accelerated from rest for each trial.

1. The student has the following AP Physics equations available:

v x =v o +a x t 2 2
v x =v o +2 a x (x −x o)

1 2 ⃗
F net
x=x o + v o t + a x t a⃗ =
2 m
Develop an expression for the relationship between the net unbalanced force acting on the cart and the time
required to travel the fixed 1.00 m distance from rest.

2. The following data is recorded.

Manipulation of time
Unbalanced force (N) Time (s)
1.00 1.23
1.50 0.99
2.00 0.86
2.50 0.78
3.00 0.72
3.50 0.65

a) Draw a graph of Force versus Time for the data provided. Even though time is the dependent variable, plot
time along the horizontal axis.
(2)
b) Does the graph of Force vs. time support the expression developed in #1? Explain.
(1)

c) Based on the relationship identified in #1 manipulate the “time” data in order to produce a second graph
which yields a linear relationship for the data. A second column in the data table has been provided to input
the “manipulated” values of time.
(2)

d) Use the linearized graph from c) and the expression developed in #1 to determine the mass of the cart.
