I totally prefer Bri sh English.

Oh, really? - Yeah, yeah.

That's great news.

I'm an English teachers. - Oh, really? - Yeah.

How funny. - That's perfect.

Okay. Oh, okay, we've got a pro.

So I did study it then, and then eventually...

Okay, so as an English expert...

No, no!

You can't do that, no.

Why is that?

I just... I don't know.

It's the real deal?

ti
It's the real deal.

Yeah, yeah, it's really, probably.

I like it much be er than American English.

If someone is trying to learn English,

what would you...

what ps, or hints, or secrets would you...

Oh, watch movies in English.

Foo Fighters.

Really simple.

Super catchy lyrics.

And you will get to learn a lot.

I like Bri sh series, in English.

Oh, really? - Yes, because it's easy to understand.

Very friendly, very welcoming.

I always enjoy going to London, yeah.

Does that mean Americans are impolite and unfriendly?

I didn't say that, no.

Can you speak English?

Just a li le bit, yeah.

Okay, sounds good.

Can you speak English?

Just a li le bit.

Can you speak English?

I can.

Can you speak English?

Yes.

That's good.

Do you speak English?

Yes, I do. - You do speak English?

Yeah. - Very good.

And how did you learn English?

I learned English at school,

but I don't prac ce English very o en,

so I don't have to work in English, and that's why.

How did you learn English, or are you s ll learning English?

I'm always s ll learning English. - Oh yeah? Great!

But, I learnt it at school. - Okay.

And then, I learnt it because I was in England.

And how did you learn English?

Well, I started in school? - Okay.

And then, I picked a lot of that up in my work, actually.

So I worked in a lot of companies where English was the...

was the spoken language.

And a er school, were you interested in learning more English?

Yes, kind of.

And what why is that?

Because of more opportuni es, I think.

If someone is trying to learn English,

what would you... what ps, or hints,

or secrets would you... - Oh, watch movies in English.

Listen to a lot of music

and understand what they're saying.

Right, and what music were you listening to?

Everything.

Rock and roll.

Rap.

I guess the best way to learn a language is to...

to live in the country where you speak that language.

Or to have friends, or a boyfriend, or girlfriend,

that talks in that language.

So another... another source where I have...

or another way I learnt English is;

I started watching lots of movies and TV shows in English.

What ps then, would you give to someone,

if they want to improve the English, a er school?

Well, dive into the experience.

I mean, whether it's watching movies or just...

ge ng out of your comfort zone

and then being confronta onal about it.

And then, not really feeling uncomfortable about the accent

or whatever it is, because in the end,

the accent is something that shows you,

that you're willing to go for it and learn something.

So I think, it's really good to have an accent

and then, you know, that shows that you're interested

in di erent languages and di erent cultures.

So I think, just going for it and not really being...

don't really caring about...

like, not really caring about making mistakes, or whatever it is.

And how how did you learn English?

My father is from America, my mother, from Germany,

but I don't know him. - Okay, and so do you think you speak

Bri sh English or American English?

Hmm... some mes like this, some mes like that.

Would you say you speak American or Bri sh English?

More American, for sure. - Yeah? - Yeah.

Is that because of the band you're listening to? - Yeah.

Do you speak American English or Bri sh English?

Um... it's a mix of both, I guess.

And how did you learn English?

I grew up in the States for a while,

and then, that's when I picked it up. - Oh really?

So you would say... because I've been asking most people

what English do you speak; Bri sh or American English?

And they don't really know.

Well, with me, it'd probably be American English.

And maybe this is an obvious ques on now,

because of where you were staying.

But were you learning English or American English?

Euro English.

What is Euro English?

Just a bit of everything.

It's a bit of everything.

Do you speak American English or Bri sh English?

Do you know?

I think I speak like, German accent English. So...

I speak English with a German accent.

So, I dunno.

In school, we learnt Bri sh English, I think.

Do you need to use your English, ever,

for when you're in Germany?

No, not for my work, not for my work.

To... to... to talk to friends, of course,

that live abroad, for example.

I have lots of friends in Denmark,

So we... we.... We talk in English.

But not for work purposes.

Do you use English in Germany?

A lot. - A lot? - Yeah. - More than German?

Partly, yes, because I work a lot in English.

How much, would you say you speak German,

as to how much do you speak English, like daily?

At the moment, I speak English every day,

because the girlfriend from from my roommate is from Costa Rica

and she only speaks English and Spanish.

So like, in the last weeks, every day.

And it was okay for you? You were up for...

you wanted to learn more English, for your job?

Absolutely. - Yeah? - Yeah. - I like English, yeah.

And also, I work in a... I work in the eld where

most of the literature was... was English, so.

And I had to learn a lot from the internet...

mee ng on the Internet and also the materials were in English,

so it came quite naturally to me.

I have a lot of di erent kinds of friends,

a lot of like, di erent friends from di erent na onali es,

with a di erent background language.

And the way we communicate with each other, is in English.

Do you, in your me in Berlin, do you speak... or in Germany,

do you speak much English?

Not really. I mean, I do have a lot of friends that are bilingual,

but in the end, I would say I speak mostly German.

And of course, you have to be a bit cau ous,

because everybody uses that language...

you know, bends it, in in a way.

But I think English is exactly the language

where everyone does it with I mean,

like, it's not so easy to do that with German.
