Instructions:

Using your reports submitted for DAP 2 and instructional materials on Protein (powerpoints,
outline notes, your book) answer the following questions in your own words below:

Protein Questions:

1. Calculate your RDA for protein: Show your work. (1 point).

(Note: RDA = Body Weight in kg x 0.8)
( weight in pounds ÷ 2.2 = weight in kg)
1. My body weight is 133.8 and when converting it to kilograms I divided
133.8 by 2.2 and my answer is 60.81 kg.
2. To find out my average daily dietary intake for protein I multiplied my
body weight in kilograms 60.81 by 0.8 and my answer is 4.8648.

2. Look at the Recommendations report, macronutrient distribution report and bar

graph.. (0.5 point).
1. How many grams of protein did you eat?
- I ate seventy-four point five grams of protein.

3. The dietary guidelines suggest limiting most animal sources of protein, while
increasing plant, fish and seafood sources of protein. Refer to the Recommendations
report, macronutrient distribution report and bar graph. (1.5 points.)
1. Describe the sources of protein you consumed over these 3 days:
- The sources of the protein I consumed were pork, beef, cheese, and
chicken. Some of the foods I consumed from pig meat was spam,
canadian bacon, and ham; from beef I consumed hamburgers, beef
hotdogs, and ground beef; and from chickens I consumed eggs and
chicken nuggets.
2. Do your protein sources align with these recommendations?

- No they did not, the majority of my protein came from animals such as
cattle, pigs, and chickens. I did not eat any plant, fish, or seafood source of
protein like dietary guidelines suggested.

4. Refer to the Recommendations report, macronutrient distribution report and bar

graph. Pick 5 sources of protein and describe a healthier option for each of the 5
sources. (5 points).
1. Beef meat is a good source of protein, but a healthier option would be
beans and legumes.
2. Cow’s milk is a good source of protein, but a healthier alternative would
be soy milk.
3. Eggs are a good source of protein, but a healthier option would be tofu.
4. Chicken meat is also a good source of protein, but peas would be a
healthier protein option.
5. Pork meat is a good source of protein, but a healthier option would be fish.

5. Explain the health benefits of the following. (3 points).

1. Limiting fatty and animal sources of protein:

- A health benefit of limiting fatty and animal sources of protein is reducing the

risk of suffering from heart disease, obesity, high cholesterol, or a stroke. All of

these issues cause harm to our bodies therefore lowering our life span so when

people limit the sources of fatty and animal proteins they consume people are

healthier therefore they live longer.

2. Including fish and seafood sources of protein:

- A health benefit of including fish and seafood sources of protein in a person's diet

is that they are full of healthy proteins, vitamins, and nutrients therefore making

people's bodies healthier. The vitamins and nutrients that fish and seafood sources

of protein contain help aid in lowering blood pressure. Also these vitamins and

nutrients help reduce the risk of contracting heart disease and suffering from a

stroke.

3. Including plant sources of protein (nuts, seeds, legumes):

- A health benefit of including plant sources of protein in a person's diet is that it

helps reduce the risk of contracting chronic diseases. They also help improve

digestion, metabolism, and cardiovascular health. The reason plant sources of

proteins help reduce the risk of suffering from chronic disease is because they are

full of antioxidants that protect a person’s cells against unstable atoms that can

damage cells, cause illnesses, and aging in the human body.

6. Give one example of a complete source of protein you consumed during the three-day
period. (1.5 points).

- A complete source of protein that I consumed during the three day food
analysis was a hamburger.

1. Why is this considered a complete source of protein?

- Hamburger meat is considered a complete source of protein because it contains all

essential amino acids a human body needs.

7. Give one example of an incomplete source of protein you consumed during the
three-day period. (1.5 points).

- An incomplete source of protein that I consumed during the three day food
analysis was a granola bar because it contained nuts and seeds.

1. Why is this considered an incomplete source of protein?

- Nuts and seeds are considered an incomplete source of protein because they are
either low or absent in one or more of the amino acids that our bodies need to
build cells.
