Find the right journal

• What journals you reads often?


• Who are your target readers?
• Open access or subscription?
• Review speed
• Check the journal metrics
✓ Quartiles (Q1 – Q4): These quartiles rank
the journals from highest to lowest based on their
impact factor
✓ Impact Factor
Measure of the number of times an average paper in a
particular journal is cited during the preceding two
year
✓ Etc.

Receiving reviews

• What reviewers do:


✓ Determine the validity, significance and
originality of the work
✓ Suggest improvements to the manuscript and
the research
• Revision needed could be minor or major
• Address all comments from each reviewer
• Rebuttal letter
• We can also disagree with reviewers'
comments/suggestion. Justify your arguments!

Dealing with rejection
Keep trying!

• Always have backup journals in mind


• Improve manuscript based on feedback
from previous reviewers
• Resubmit the revised manuscript (to a
different journal)

A rejected manuscript doesn’t


necessarily mean that it is not
worth publishing!

Promote your work

• Share link and offprint


• Be aware of the copyright
• Be discovered online (Google
Scholar, Scopus, ORCID,
Research Gate, Academia)
• Conferences
• Social Media
• Communicate your research with
a layman language (e.g., write a
popular article in media)
Tips: take advantage of a right
moment

After acceptance
Monitor your impact

• Collaboration – how big is your network?


• Scholarly output – how productive are you?
• Usage – how often have your publications been
viewed?
• Altmetrics – how many times is your output shared in
collaboration networks?
• Journal status – what’s the status of the journals that
have published your work?
• Citation count – how many citations has your articles
received?
• h-index – this rates your entire publication career
based on both output and citation impact. (An h-index
of 5 indicates that 5 of a researcher’s articles have
each received at least 5 citations.)
Give back by accepting review invitations!
