INTRODUCTION

The traditional pottery industry in Sri Lanka has a rich cultural heritage and plays a significant role
in the livelihood of artisans in rural areas. Pottery is a timeless craft deeply embedded in the
cultural fabric of Sri Lanka. Traditional potters in rural villages have been the custodians of this
ancient art form for generations. However, since recent times, artisans of traditional pottery have
been facing many challenges, especially with the competition from mass-produced pottery and the
arrival of various substitutes. They have also had to face the economic and legal background in Sri
Lanka. This report aims to explore the life and challenges of a traditional potter in a rural Sri
Lankan village and examine strategies for overcoming these challenges and sustaining traditional
pottery.

CONTEX OF THE CASE STUDY SCENARIO

For generations, rural families have been involved in the pottery industry. They have honed their skills
and passed their knowledge from one generation to another. Their traditional pottery, decorated with
intricate designs, was once in high demand in the local market, but is now in decline due to the market
economy.

challenges:

• Competition from mass-produced ceramics: The most important challenge they face is stiff

competition from mass-produced ceramics. Large factories and corporations flood the market

with profits, uniforms, and machine-made products. These products not only reduce the cost

of their handmade pottery but also attract a wide customer base due to their affordability.

• Economic Struggles: Their income from pottery has gradually decreased. With less and less

buyers willing to pay for the craftsmanship and uniqueness of his products, Jeet struggles to

make ends meet. This economic pressure reduces the mother industry's ability to invest and

purchase necessary materials.

• Changing consumer preferences: Modern consumers often prefer sleek, mass-produced

ceramics that fit a contemporary aesthetic. They consider traditional pottery old-fashioned and

less practical for everyday use.

• Limited access to technology: Potters' artisan methods depend on old methods passed down
from generation to generation, so the efficiency and production capacity is low compared to
modern substitutes.

• Lack of marketing and exposure: The pottery of rural producers is hidden in the village. Lack

of resources and knowledge to reach the consumer to market the products effectively.

Personal reflections, opinions, or experiences related to the topic

In a rural village in Sri Lanka, a traditional potter faces many challenges in the life of a
traditional potter who faces the competition of mass-produced pottery and still continues his
traditional pottery industry. In discussing the challenges they face in light of my experience,

• The grant problem is that the new generation of these industrialists have left this traditional

industry, so there is a possibility that this business will almost disappear from Sri Lanka in the

future.

• Another problem is the difficulty in procuring the clay needed to produce these pots and the

legal problems that occur during their transportation have forced these potters to leave.

• And it takes a lot of effort to grind the found clay mixture. Besides, the mixture must be

properly mixed otherwise the pottery made from it will be defective.

• If the process of baking these products is not done properly, the quality of the products will be

affected. It should be done with proper quality because there is no purchase in the market of

these products.

FUTURE PROSPECTS

• Cultural Revival and Recognition:

Increased awareness and appreciation of cultural heritage may lead to a resurgence of
interest in traditional pottery. Local authorities should assist in preserving and promoting
traditional crafts.

• Tourism and cultural experiences:

Sri Lanka's rural villages often attract tourists seeking authentic cultural experiences.
Artisans can take advantage of this by opening workshops or studios, holding pottery-
making classes and selling their creations as souvenirs. This can diversify their sources of
income.

• Artisan Cooperatives and Cooperation:

Artisan cooperatives and collaborations with local and international designers help
traditional pottery artisans to adapt to contemporary market demands. These partnerships
can lead to innovative product designs and access to broader markets.

• Access to technology and training:

New equipment should be provided free of charge or under credit facility. Government
initiatives or non-governmental organizations can provide traditional artisans with access
to technology such as pottery making equipment and digital marketing tools. Training
programs help improve their skills and efficiency.

• Online Market :
The growth of e-commerce and online marketplaces provides a platform for artisans to
reach a global audience. With the right support and training, they can establish an online
presence and sell their products worldwide.

6
