SDG 3: Ensure Healthy Lives and Promote Well-Being for All at All
Ages
“Health is a state of the body. Wellness is a state of
being.” - J. Stanford
In our rapidly evolving world, the pursuit of global well-
being has become an imperative that transcends borders and
cultures. As we navigate the complexities of the 21st century,
the interconnectedness of our world has underscored the
importance of fostering sustainable development that benefits
every individual, regardless of age, gender, socioeconomic
status, and diverse culture. According to the WHO (2021),
maintaining good health is not only a fundamental human right but
also essential for individuals to lead fulfilling lives,
contribute effectively to society, and achieve their full
potential. Furthermore, good health is a key driver of economic
development, as healthier populations are more productive and
resilient.
However, in the pursuit of achieving healthy lives and well-
being for all, the track is definitely a challenging process. In
modern times, there is a continuous emergence of various
diseases. Despite notable strides, the country encounters
persistent obstacles in achieving optimal health and well-being.
Challenges include disparities in healthcare access and quality,
particularly in remote or underserved regions (WHO, 2021). The
burden of communicable and non-communicable diseases poses a
substantial health threat, requiring comprehensive strategies for
prevention and treatment (DOH, 2022). Furthermore, the goal of
universal health coverage confronts hurdles related to healthcare
financing and infrastructure, impacting the affordability and
accessibility of essential services (ADB, 2021). Hence, to
address these challenges effectively, there is a need for
sustained investments in healthcare, research, and risk
reduction, emphasizing the importance of a coordinated, multi-
sectoral approach (UNDP, 2021).
Amidst the challenges we face, there exists a visionary plan
that seeks to address fundamental issues and guide humanity
toward a more equitable and prosperous future. This plan is
encapsulated in the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals
(SDGs), a set of 17 objectives designed to address a range of
global issues by the year 2030, (United Nations, n.d.). The SDGs
cover a wide range of interconnected issues, including poverty,
hunger, health, education, gender equality, clean water,
sanitation, affordable and clean energy, decent work and economic
growth, industry, innovation and infrastructure, reduced
inequalities, sustainable cities, and communities, responsible
consumption and production, climate action, life below water,
life on land, peace, justice, and strong institutions, and
partnerships for the goals.
