Fungi
Mycology is the study of fungi. The fungi include yeasts, molds & fleshy fungi. Yeast are unicellular organisms.
Molds are multicellular filamentous organisms such as mildews, rust & smuts. Fleshy fungi multicellular filamentous
organisms that produce a thick fleshy reproductive body like mushrooms, puffballs & coral fungi. Some fungi may exist
in two forms: yeast & or molds, at specific temperatures thus are called dimorphic fungi.
Fungi are saprophytes and they are mistakenly referred to as plants & algae. However, they are not
photosynthetic, since they are achlorophyllous. Fungi reproduce by means of spores; either sexual or asexual.
Reproduction of fungi serves as basis of classifying them into five classes.
Materials:
Compound microscope
Prepared slides of:
Rhizopus
Aspergillus
Saccharomyces cerevisiae
Penicillin
Mushroom
Procedure:
1. Obtain prepared slide of the different fungi on the list.
2. Examine under the microscope from LPO to HPO. Take note of their size, shape, and spores.
3. Record your observations.
4. List the characteristics of the 5 classes of fungi. Give examples for each class.
